Dark Skies not in the same league as above, and gets mixed reviews but I enjoyed the creepiness and it made me jump a few times. Ignore plot nonsense and is fun.

I can’t work out whether it’s actually a good film or a grab-bag of horror film staples. Either way, I felt exceptionally bleak afterwards so I’ll give it 2 thumbs up. Don’t watch a trailer beforehand, as it gives far too much away (the film swerves massively half way through).

The recent Evil Dead remake surprised me by being pretty good – It shares a name and general premise, but otherwise is it’s own film.

Oh, also The Mist (as recommended by someone on here a few weeks ago). Really, really good.

as you watch from the perspective of the bad guy. I’m not sure whether it’s a sign that I’m dead inside or the intent of the film, but I ended up rooting for the “bad” guy.

Insidious was alright until the beast reveals itself…. Weird dancing cross dressed spider/lady gaga thing was hilarious.

The Descent.

Fan of the genre and a few years on still one of the best. Tense, atmospheric, very claustrophobic, and if I said any more I’d spoil it. Just make sure its the UK not US edit (different endings).

John Carpenter’s The Thing for fantastical non-CGI effects, atmosphere and pitch black humour.

The Descent – scariest horror film for many years.
The Ring, and pretty much any Japanese horror film. I actually found the US remake pretty good: It’s very bleak, and has a very unsettling atmosphere.

+1 30 Days Of Night (for me more of a good action/suspense film than keep you up at night but it’s a great suspense film with good looking lead actors)

Boring, nearly walked out of the cinema. Only reason I didn’t was because I thought gf was enjoying it, turns out she was thinking the same as me 😀

I loved it, found it really intense, but then at the time I was solo night-riding regularly in essentially the same woods (neighbouring state, same hill range). If you empathised with and put yourself in the position of the characters it was disturbing, if you didnt it was boring.

I watched ‘the conjuring’ based on the recommendation here and I loved it, very spooky and some proper scares.

I am quite interested in Horrors, Id recommend a few.

Sinister was great, cept for the dancing children. Classic scare tactics in a not so samey premise.

The Woman In Black, If you can look past Harry Potters wooden acting though.

The Conjuring is great and well executed.

Mama is good, except for the eternal spoiler of seeing the monster at the end.

A Haunting In Connecticut is a genuinely good film with creepy bits in.

The Descent is a brilliant low budget horror that kicked the ass off the Americans version, The Cave.

Worth checking out The Unborn too. Oh, and the original version of Shutter, not the American version.

The new Evil Dead is punchy and cringy gore but well done.

Just watched Shadow (2009) bit of a b-movie horror but does have mountain biking in it.

[rec] is awesome, probably my favourite horror film. The final scene is just horrible haha. The sequels are gash though.

Wasn’t so keen on The Conjuring (despite it having the only jump-scare to make me throw tea over myself) as it seemed to just get bored and tail off after all that build up.

Agreed, the original of shutter is good. Treads a very familiar path, but that ending is creepy as all hell.

I quite liked both of the Insidious films, though I’ve already forgotten the 2nd one, and Passtherizla’s right about the beast in the 1st – it all goes a bit ’90s Nu-metal music video there.

Just watched Dark Skies and despite that being a extraterrestrial rather than supernatural it’s still got a few good jumps.

Watching horror films in the dead of night, in an empty house, with headphones on is ace!

Grave encounters was nifty too, I expected it to be awful!

I picked up A Serbian Film the other week – I’m not sure whether the “oh my god, it’s the most shocking thing ever” quotes on the box and on IMDB led me to overprepare, or whether I’ve got the cut version (fairly sure it’s the full one), but I got a “oh, i see what you’re doing there. Very controversial. Well done, have a biscuit.” feel from it.
Or possibly I’m become to inured to these things. It’s very nicely shot though, and worth a look on that score. Anyone else seen it? Opinions?

I remember Ghostwatch! Truly brilliant at the time. Think I was about 13, might go try find it for a rewatch!

I have loved horror movies since a kid (well, psychological/supernatural thrillers) and always on the lookout for a decent scare (hard to come by in these days of Generican torture-porn-by-numbers)

Haven’t read the thread yet so apologies in advance if there are duplicates but here’s a little list of some that I consider a ‘cut above’ ~

*Edit just realised this is an old thread! Do recommend watching that short film (Whistle And I’ll Come To You ) that I linked back there . Simple, creepy and so well acted. You never quite know if it’s his ailing mind or a real entity.

Just watched ‘As above so below’ not exactly terrifying but not a bad way to pass 90minutes.
