Why do I still crave the XT's? Is it a case of get the best now or is it a case of its got more features and has a higher model-designation

I got some SLX 2 months ago. Same as all my other Shimano brakes .... Easy to fit, zero maintenance, easy to swap pads, simple to bleed (I use a syringe and small piece of rubber tube) and plenty of power/no fade.
I've had Hayes, Hope and Avid brakes too and Shimano are reliable and much less hassle.

I have the XT versions and I have to tell you, the freestroke adjustment isn't pointless. When you establish how to adjust them correctly they make for a lovely sharp and incredibly powerfull brake. The SLX work fine, but they just dont feel quite as nice to me as the xt with an agressive cam adjustment.
Youll still be happy with the SLX i'm sure.

Hora and other Ribble purchasers; how are the hose lengths? Ribble say 1000mm, which seems long for a front and short for a rear, so how do they come up? Do they fit fine, or are the silly long and need trimming? The XT's look stonking value with the mad triple discount (if like me you dont need rotors).

MC - I bougth the XT's from Ribble a few weeks ago, and like you , didn't need rotors. Delivery was about 2 days, hose lengths both front and rear are perfect for my 17inch Rock Lobster hardtail. HTH

thanks iainc, theyll either be going on a 16" hardtail or 17" FS with pretty direct routing so they sound just the job.

Well my first ride on my SLX's tonight and found them really good - nice and sharp - they need another bleed after I shortened the hoses and were a little spnogy but sharpened up through use and a proper bleed should sort that out
