Just how shagged are my cranks and pedals (with pics)

Finally managed to remove a seized pedal from the crank today but going along to my local garage and borrowing some 'heavy equipment' and it's turned out a right mess........

Cranks...

My lovely RF Atlas threads are stripped

Pedals...

XTR pedals have seen better days, threads are fine but cracks have appeared on the barrel of the allen bolt

so whats the general opinion?
a) nah, they're fine
b) should be okay but i'd watch it
c) completely gubbed, for the bin!
d) personal comment

You could get the threads in the cranks drilled out and helicoiled, then replace the pedal axles and all is sorted.

You can try retapping the threads at home by threading the pedals in the opposite way. It's a crude method and not one guaranteed to work, but it's worth a try.

helicoil, £15-£20 a thread usualy, and generaly stronger than the original thread. Try local engineering workshops, places that do engine re-builds, etc etc.

God knows how you siezed them that badly though?

Re tap the cranks with a proper tap (LBS should have one) they are alloy and you will be surprised how they will come back. but your next pedals in with a suitable loctite (try bearing fit) or copperslip.
They will either go up nice and tigh or the threads will strip. they won't come undone as you are pedalling.
Spuds- the axles are rubbish, bin them, but you might be able to source replacement ones via madison.

Just called the local wheelbuilder and he seems to think the cranks are no problem, the pedals however may be a different story!
oh...and i've trimmed the fingernails!

Why were you so keen to get them out?

Why not just carry on using them as they were?

Get yourself some shimano cranks, cheaper and better and replace the axle.

Could potentially even just tap that crank thread - hard to tell from the photo. Seen a lot of shimano pedals with cracks like that but never seen one actually break.

i personally would not helicoil those cranks i just wold not trust them,its certainly not stronger & the risk of failure is too high.

slx cranks £89.00crc & new pedals £30.00merlin job done.bin the old stuff in the bin.

Get them threads retapped, they'll be fine. Seen much worse saved.

I'd replace the pedal axle- be a bit of a beggar to be stuck in the middle of a ride with a snapped axle.

in my (limited) experience I would helicoil the crank. But you could do this if the re-tapping was unsuccessful. Shimano axles should be easy to hold of. And use copper slip next time young man.

************UPDATE************

Cranks sorted absolutely no problem £4 at lbs

Pedals, lbs replaced the spindle £4

£8 sorted all the problems, kinda glad i didn't bin 'em now!

result that i had the same happen to raceface evolve cranks just got new 1s in the end . might look into getting them repaired now

XTR pedals have a ti axle (probably don't now for the £4). Cranks are Alu. I'm guessing they were installed without proper grease, and so bonded with the cranks... schoolboy error.
