    my phone has just rung once, and the number is Bulgarian according to google. Is Bulgaria the latest home of the phone scammers, or are they on their holidays?

    Very likely to be some kind of phone scam. BTW Someone phoning on a roaming UK mobile would still come up as a UK no.
