    Not quite

It can still be an unfair dismissal but you have no recourse to a tribunal with less than now two years serivece

Isn’t that the same as what I said – you can legally be unfairly dismissed, or are you saying that it’s illegal ?

Although fair enough about the qualifying period being now increased to 2 years, I knew it was in the cards but hadn’t realised that it kicked in last month – it doesn’t seem to have had much news coverage. And I knew that Thatcher had increased the qualifying period from 6 months to a year when she first got elected, and which was the same as under Blair, but I hadn’t realised that she had then gone on the doubling it again – useful to know that as it provides yet another example of how little rights she thought ordinary working people were entitled to have.

Damo, I’m in the north west, East Lancs, if you’re in the area I’d be interested, email in my profile, thanks.

Still feel rather numb this morning, can’t quite get over the fact there was absolutely no warning, you’d have thought out ethical decency there would have at least been something unambiguous said.

On reflection I think I’ve been used as a scape goat for the fact everything they’ve tried to do over the last 6 months has spectacularly failed, the shop floor unions have successfully stood up to them, the rest of the management team have been there a while so would be difficult to do anything with, the supervisory staff are fighting them every step of the way. I was just easy pickings.

Exactly the same happened to me, invited to lunch for my 3 month review, they bought me a drink and fired me expecting me to go straight home. When I informed them my house keys were in my desk I was escorted to my desk in front of the office in deadly silence and escorted back out of the door.

All worked out in the end, but crikey, I felt AWFUL that day, really really low, you have my sympathy.

I win though, they were sub-human cretins and I’m awesome.

There’s your problem, right there. Small businesses, the engine of the economy – my backside. Many small business owners I’ve come across – fickle, opinionated

We once bought a telecoms reseller. The owner’s wife was nuts – if ever anyone left, she’d play over an office PA system “Another One Bites the Dust”.

    Mental.

(But not half as unpleasant as law firm partners – the most ruthless you can imagine.)

    This is it.

And for that reason, you can hold your head high.

Thanks people, knowing I’m not alone makes me a lot better (never been anywhere near this situation before).

Marco, ironically we’re going to Florida in 4 weeks 😀

Yeah I know, wife worked for a law firm for a long time as a trainer, was treated like dirt as were all the support staff because they weren’t lawyers. She got made redundant in the end although the two people at risk were her and the personnel directors sister, you can guess what happened.

    Even worse as a lawyer….

I once got fired from a one horse software company in Cardiff. To be fair, I most definitely wasn’t a ‘good fit’ for the company. He complained about how I dressed when I was making an effort (so why didn’t you specify a dress code?) and he was livid when I skated to work a few times. He went off on one and fired me – during the confrontation I asked him if he’d looked at my work. He deflated for a second and admitted he hadn’t…

If I’d been older I’d have torn him a new one (verbally) but I was only 24 at the time and still feeling young. Total bell-end. Of course I got a better job with way more pay (eventually – the immediately following one one was also pants).

Commiserations to the OP though – it’ll get better, you really don’t want to feel stuck in a company like that, trust me.

Worked at one job, and got told by the office creep, that the boss didnt like me, and a snowball had more chance of surviving the heat of hell, than i did of staying there, a few weeks latter i was sacked.

That’s a shit way to treat you.

Just as well, a company that will do that will do anything, good riddance

Same happened to me mid march OP.

I was called down to the bosses office one lunch time and was told they had no more work to give me (whether that’s true or not I don’t know) and that I could leave that afternoon! Totally understand that you’re feeling shocked, it took a week or so for it to sink in.

The pisser of it was I’d been busting my arse for them in the weeks before, working late into the night to complete projects only for this to happen. No feedback, warning or anything and I’d they’d poached me from another job only six months before.

Despite all this, I’m now glad to be clear of the place, it was an unbelievably shi*e place to work. Keep your head up fella!

Happened to me years ago but I’d been there a few years already. Basically the MD was a man-hater so I was always on borrowed time. I didn’t know it at the time but it made alot of sense afterwards. It took me a couple of weeks to recover.

Well looks like last laugh is with me. Had a nice holiday, did some trail building with Clixbys and start a new job with a higher salary on Monday. Couldn’t have planned it better.

Thanks for all the support above, the suddeness of what happened did leave me reeling a little and the comments above really helped put things in perspective. I was a little amazed at how many people had been in the same situation.

Excellent. Been there, didn’t like it. Glad you’re sorted.
I got work soon after and bought a cx bike with my unspent redundancy. The Man is an idiot sometimes.

The same happened to me, sacked and back into a job within months.

Just a word of warning – I was back in a job so fast I didn’t have time to reflect on what happened. It took years for me to regain my confidence, and even now I struggle at times!

    Good news however – enjoy!

Straight off to Citizens Advise mate. While you won’t want to probably go back you may well get some compensation. You weren’t by any chance 1 day/week under 6 months were you?

    Best of luck.

Stumpyjon – just read this thread from start for the first time, glad to hear you have come out the other side of this in a better position. I have had the same thing happen to me and I now look at work/employers with my eyes a bit more open!. It might be tempting to plot revenge on your previous employers but it wouldn’t be as satisfying as you might think… being in a better job after trail building and a holiday is all the revenge you need. If they keep treating staff like that they wont be around long anyway. Good result!

as a salesman this happens quite a lot and unless you got your ‘rights’ (which you don’t) it’s a case of dust yourself off and look for a better opportunity.

This happened to me in April and I’ve got a far better job now and slowing pinching every contract that my ex company is clinging on to. If they manage to keep it they make no money otherwise I take it, very satisfying to say the least

Nice one. Just had a similar outcome myself. New job starts in 10 days. Can’t wait to get stuck in.

I worked for a dodgy direct marketing company. Selling talk talk mobile sim cards.
I was good at it too. One of the top sellers. But I am quite an akward **** to manage if I want to be and the call centre manager took a dislike to me and made it difficult for me. Ended up quitting half way through a bullsh*t disaplinary. For wearing a shirt that wasn’t office attire (despite wearing same shirt to my interview).
Stupid guy obviously never learnt in the 9 months I was there to not piss me off cos I WILL get my own back. For some strange reason elf and saftey got a call about a lack of employers liability insurance. Guy was closed down and company (not TalkTalk) got a fine of £2500 per person per day. They had about 50 people working there too and HSE went through all the paperwork to see when they last had EL insurance. Turns out is was about 3 years!!!!! Wish I’d “fallen” down a couple of stairs now!

    Without insurance?

    Scary isn’t it.
May not have been 3 years but they didn’t have any paperwork for 3 years.

Last I heard the company was trading under another name. Lets hope they’re insured this time 🙂
