  • Just been smoked all over in our local m.o.t. garage………

The guy who owned the garage was smoking a fag. Because I had to pay in his tiny office and by cheque, which seemed to take for ages, the smoke quickly filled this room and I felt the need to run out and get fresh air. Could I or should I have said soemthing? Also I thought because the public come into his place of work this was again’st the law.
Not taking into account he is working with cars, filled with petrol.

Phew at least the car passed the test ,so all was not lost.

I’d go for a scan immediately, you’ve probably got a tumour growing in your lungs as we speak. You can’t be too careful 😮

    live and let live maybe?

Fellas grafting so hard, he hasn’t got time to keep niping out to his designated smoking area.

FWIW I get smoked over all day everyday at work

No one died. He doesn’t care about his own health so yours wouldn’t concern him too much. Get on with your life.

Couldn’t you have made loud coughing noises whilst waving your arms around 🙄

If you’re really bothered tell the local council, they’ll send of of their ‘smoking gestapo’ round and fine him and probably put him out of business.

If not ‘live and let live’

He’s a mechanic. Therefore, he has to smoke; it’s a requirement of the job.

The ability to have a cig in yer gob, whilst upside down underneath a car, is a skill that takes years to perfect.

Think yourself fortunate that you’ve got a proper mechanic, not some fly-be-night charlatan.

No thanks guys, it does bother me, alot in fact.
After seeing my Father die a really nasty horrible death, due to him smoking since the age of 16 and only giving up when the specialist gave him months to live.

Off for a ride now, to get some nice car fumes into these small lungs of mine.

should read: “live and let die”
but obviously if he has so little respect for his own stinking carcass he’s going to be less bothered about yours. Next time just say you’ll post the cheque.

    ooh you poor love.

I drove behind a smoker the other day and could smell his fag. I’ve just bought life insurance.

one of the blokes at work smokes – you can smell him coming up the stairs 🙁 I’ve no objection to people smoking if they wish, so long as they don’t bother to share it.

It’s not really such a big deal though, is it?

Just don’t go there next time and tell him why. It’s his decision and his loss. There’s a very nice, non-smoking garage local to me, though maybe a little far for you guys.

I like the irony of someone complaining of others polluting the air, when THEY’RE ABOUT TO PICK UP THEIR CAR

I’ll stick to choosing my gargage/sparky/chip on weather or not they’re much cop, rather than their smoking habits thanks

    its illegal.

its not illegal to be awkward, its to protect you, and the general public, various members of who will have to be in and out his office constantly.

i think i would have asked him to not smoke while i was in the room, or go and write him his cheque outside, or at least open a window/door

    or find another garage.

    or call the “smoking gestapo”

the police will ticket you if your a self employed plumber (for instance), in your own personal works van, which only you drive, and only you will even ride in, because its a place of work.
so why should you have to put up with it in a location you need to be in order to be his customer?

with fuel around, and oily rags, and solvents, sealth and hafety will have a fit too.

you may have passed, but he still seems like a bit of a cowboy to me.

our fammily mechanic is a right backstreet affair, hard to find, not really publiscised, based on word of mouth reccomendations, but once you get into his workshop, you can tell instantly its an ok place.
always tidy, and the rules is the rules with regards to safety of staff and customers

The self employed plumber who can’t smoke in his van, but has no legal right to stop you smoking in his work place, ie, your house.

    Aye, blinding idea that.

I think all those smokers defending a fellow smoker should declare an interest so we can determine how much weight to give to their comments (ie none 🙂

    you woeful little man

how did you know ? I’ve been doing a lot of crying since I read about Bunnyhop’s cruel ordeal 🙁

    I don’t smoke.

I really really really feel sorry for the traumatic experience Bunnyhop has been subjected to.

It took you a while to choose your definition of woeful, you’ve quoted it twice.

I don’t smoke, I do have to work hard to make a living, often without having time to take a proper break, so yes, I probably do have a small amount in common with the Mechanic.

The scales have been pulled from my eyes, and I realise that my prejudice against smoking had blinded me to the vicious oppression of the working man inflicted by the heartless Bunnyhop, acting as proxy for the Nanny State. I hope she’s ashamed of herself now!

Mister P – yep still pay by cheque ( self employed).

trailmonkey- I personally love the irony of someone making holier-than-thou comments about people they know nothing about

Anyway- thanks to olly and others for the sensible answers. To the others-I now remember why I hardly post up on STW.

Got to go now as got a bit moist riding to meet hubby on his commute home from work.

Go home, get pissed, throw smokey clothes in a general line from door to bed on your bedroom floor, wake up tomorrow with a stinking hangover, and a room smelling of smoke, and clothes smelling worse, . . .

    aghhh those were the days!!

I couldn’t agree more with the OP, I have to say though I would of reminded him that he shouldn’t be smoking at work. Put it this way would all those posters above be happy if their kids were in there while he was chuffing away?

Don’t let the miso gits get you down Bunnyhop 😉
