It’s time for a new rear mech on my cross bike and I’d like to run a Shimano clutch mech. Currently I’m running a 9 speed Deore mech with 105 shifters. I’m aware that road and MTN 10 speed stuff isn’t compatible, and don’t really want to go down the 11 speed route and have to change many components.

I came across Jtek ShiftMate (I need #6), a device to adjust the cable pull to mix and match shifters and rear mechs.

Does anyone have any experience of using this device? I was thinking of mounting it where the cable comes out from under the bar tape to keep it away from the worse of the mud/dirt, rather than mounting it near the rear mech. Any real world experience would be appreciated.

I’ve used the Lindarets equivalent- the tanpan- in both 10 and 11 speed variants and it seems to do the job fine.

You can drill a hole in the actuating arm, or make a cable clamp spacer for a 10spd mtb mech to make it work with 10spd road shifter or 7/8/9spd mtb shifters.

Drilled mech looks neater, but is obviously permanent.

I used a shiftmate to marry Campag shifters/mech to a Shimano cassette, worked absolutely fine.

Bit of an update …

I went for the Lindarets Tanpan SH-10. Set-up was easy. Indexing was good, but that didn’t last long. After a couple of times up and down the cassette with the bike on the stand the indexing was out of sync.

Seems like I’ve got a Tanpan with the first generation pulley wheel (i.e. the one that doesn’t have a cable set screw), which has cable slip problems. From the online instructions it seems that Wolftooth are aware of this issue and are offering a replacement pulley wheel (http://www.wolftoothcomponents.com/pages/tanpan-installation-instructions).

So it’s a case of waiting for a reply and hoping they’ll send the replacement promptly.

Be interested in hearing how it pans out or anybody else’s experience. Got a xtr 10 speed clutch mech sitting around doing nothing which I’d like to match to the 10 speed stis. Got a 9 speed xtr mech on there at the moment and it works fine so £35 for the tanpan seems unnecessary unless it works really well.

That’s interesting I used the tanpan on a 10 Spd set up and it was crap, set it up to work in the big ring and it failed to work in the little ring.
