I've finally finished my new light, for the tech-heads:

    Triple XP-G driven at 1 amp, a 38degree reflector (designed for P7) in a 25mm 304 stainless housing with IP68 cable gland.

and beams shots (iso 200, 3 secs, f4, auto WB)

    test shot:

    20W 13.2V MR11 halogen:

twin Seoul P4 (last year's commuter light)

    New light half power:

    New light full power:

There's a very harsh roll off at the edge of the light so twisty stuff may get interesting… may have to fit a helmet mount on it. But it's small and light and at half power should theoretically have an awesome run time.

    Roll on early sunsets!

That sir is frickin' ace – top marks. Tiny lights is where it needs to be IMO. Small batteries too. Commercialise it and make us all happy 🙂

    What did the bits cost?

And where from? I've been resisting making my own but this may just tip the balance.

I'd prefer riding with the halogen.

Very small and neat, I like it. Will it be able to dissipate enough heat though?

I've made a triple XPG and it's a bit on the big side, and quite heavy too as I was concerned about it getting hot. Going to be far too heavy to put on the helmet as I had planned.

I'm impressed with the triples light output
How heavy is 'too heavy for helmet'?

Would a 'sten gun holey can' be enough for cooling?

I feel another project coming on 😉

I built a triple P4 light a couple of years ago before Deal Extreme started selling their lights, I was about £70 for parts for the light, then about £100 for the battery and charger. I really like my light, it works really well and it is great using a light you have built your self, but by the time you pay for postage on lots of different parts, the cost can rise up a lot.

I think I would just buy a Magicshine one if I needed a light now.

Heat dissipation should be fine, led is mounted on a decent sized heat sink which is thermally connected to the outer case.

Suppliers: LED, heatsink and reflector from Led Tech in Germany.

    Driver circuit from Ebay.

Switches, wire, box, connector etc can be bought from maplin.

The housing and cable gland are scrap parts from work. In that respect I am lucky, but similar should be available from many other sources – just look around and use some imagination.

Further to this I had a light-off last night against a friend's dealextreme P7 job. The conclusion was the P7 had a slightly brighter central spot, but in terms of spread and useability mine won hands down…. sorry didn't get beamshots as proof.

Yeah, I'll go along with that observation. Quite an intense central spot of light from those torches.

A chap here bought one about two/three years ago. Lasted 18months before the vibration killed it.

Hes got a Model 601 now, bought it last year, hes now heading into his second winter with.

Yup one of my P7 torches sheared it's driver leads – it was fiddly to repair.

Does anybody make an optic for this kind of triple yet? – I think once some (swappable)become available they could be perfect – ?

Last question: Would a 'daylight/2% yellow filter' affect the colour temp noticeably?
