A guy at my old place of work got hauled into the MD's office and accused of something similar, browsing porn whilst doing overtime. His excuse was that, whilst searching Google, he accidently hit a dodgy link, and 'a few' pop-up porn boxes appeared. Fair enough – we were computer programmers, and use Google a lot for answers to problems. The MD then asked him to account for the fact that his definition of 'a few' porn pages actually numbered 746 over the space of 2 hours. He was sacked on the spot.

Yes Websense hosted would do it and costs around £20 pa per user. They are doing an offer until the end of the year.
The advantage of a hosted solution is that you would not need additional routers/firewalls/servers, assuming you already have these in place.

You really need a documented IT policy as well.

On a serious note I think he deserves one informal/off the record 'warning'. If he ignores that, hes robbing your company of money in effect. Porn can be an addiction- he needs to break the cycle at work or have a warning flag at least.

Suggest to your boss that you need to tighten up on virus's etc coming into the business (and their potential effect on the database etc) and you will send round an email to everyone reminding them to be careful not to open anything NOT work related. Remind them of the consequences for the business and you will be monitoring the server.

If he continues- he deserves punishment.

We had a lad doing it here- when you talked to him he used to clear his throat and look startled. I clocked him alongtime before. He also sent round appalling graphic old-school 'humour'. Bi-weekly he used to receive a cardboard package (I guessed it was something smutty!) anyway we got rid and the next package that came the Office manager opened. It was specialist/hardcore DVD's from Switzerland. 😐

    update-

told the MD he gave me the "aaahh its a one off dont worry about, so i pointed out and said to him straight what are you going to do about it"

i know have a budget to buy in a special filter/hub and lock down, they are also checking mr porns contract as he has signed one and it does have an internet usage policy on there.

i also asked about his references and apparently he was brought in via and agency and they do the checking – im a bit dubious how he 'left' his old job which im going to do some background work in.

the irony is he has a cold today and theres tissues allover the desk…

Thats unless the bloke wants to w@nk all over you or something, thats a different case altogether

    NZCOL…. i hope that doesnt happen…
