Is it possible on a home wifi network with an ordinary printer? As in connect the printer to the router and print from laptop elsewhere in the house. Or just go and buy a new wireless printer?

“Wireless Print Server” is what you want.

Or, if you have a computer running W7 and a printer connected to it, you can get W7 to act as the print server for another pc on the network.

What Stoner said, though I’d replace “computer running W7” with “computer”. PCs have been sharing printers long before W7 came out.

    W7 is painless though.

Some routers have a built-in USB print sharer.

Wireless printer server is a good answer but I found them to be a bit hit and miss.

However, If you have a iPhones, iPad as well just go buy a new printer with AirPrint. Makes life easier

If you have an iPhone/iPad in the house then you may also want to consider using an airport express to do the print sharing bit. It won’t let you print from your iPad/Phone but it will let you print from other devices while letting you play music from your phone through your hifi.

edit: ya beat me to it 🙂

Unless you’re printing off porn to take the bathroom, why would you need a printout if you have an iPad?

    This is true.

If you have a iPhones, iPad as well just go buy a new printer with AirPrint.

Not sure about iDevices, but you can get a Mac to print to a PC network share fairly painlessly.

I love the Apple way of thinking here. “Got an Apple device? Throw away everything else you own and it’ll Just Work!”

Samurai, you might possibly want a print of a photo for framing, as I did for my sis-in-law’s birthday pressy, or printing off a hard-copy of a receipt or a concert ticket, which I’ve again done recently. An AirPrint enabled printer makes that quick and simple, my Epson printer, which is several years old, has an iOS app that allows direct printing, and I believe HP do the same.
