Fired off an email to The Society, who very kindly responded. So it seems we may have this situation debugged! 8)
Chewkw is on the right track on the forum, but it is the cast cuticle (skin) of a true bug (Order Hemiptera) and possibly a stink/shield bug. As insects grow they shed the skin and move to the next developmental stage. It does have 6 legs, so is not a tick, but also has two antennae at the front, attached to the head. The long ‘nose’ (rostrum) shows that it is a true bug.
