I have a Conti GP4000s tyre which has only seen about 300 miles and the bead has come away from the carcass – see photo.
Is there a way that this could be safely fixed, bearing in mind it has to hold 100psi?
It’s being replaced under warranty but it would be good to get more use out of it.

Cut it up, use it for tyre boots, protecting frames, etc. etc.

seems a waste to chuck it as it’s a £40 tyre and is barely worn in.
what about patching it and stitching it?
what if I drilled two holes at the end of the split – would that stop it propagating? 🙂

You COULD try using a boot or copter tape then pumping it up to 120psi and leaving it to see if it bulges or bursts. Personally I’d get a new one, I value not hitting the road at high speed too much to risk it.

    Patch and stitch it?

It is already being replaced? Mftr often asks for the defective product to be destroyed.

I remember Santa Cruz used to ask for you to cut the BB cluster out of the frame with a hack saw and post it to them to proove you have effectively destroyed the frame (whether that was before or after they sent you a new one, I’m not sure!).

I’ve tried stitching and gluing patches to the inside of the tyre for sidewall rips like this before. Dosn’t work, don’t waste your time over it.

I’m not sure, but that doesn’t look like a bicycle tyre.

online retailer replacing it, guess they’re taking the hit rather than sending back to manufacturer.

No, I dont think it’s holding 100psi either

I wonder when that’ll go bang, leant over on fast descent I’d bet, probably about as far from your house as you can get.

well I might not have a chance to experiment because the wonderful no hassle online retailer sent me a nice new shiny tyre this morning – less than a week after I’d requested the tyre to be warrantied.
