Except that the British people haven’t decided that they would like to see him lead their country.

But certainly voting for gimmick politicians goes back a long way in Britian.

The obvious examples are Cyril Smith who won elections because he was extraordinarily fat, and Clement Freud whose gimmick was that he looked and spoke in a weird and amusing manner. They didn’t have a ounce of political conviction between them.
