It’s The Band, innit! Bob Dylan’s old band. They pretty much defy being labeled as any particular genre, you’ve got gospel, folk, country all mixed in there. Robbie Robertson’s solo work is similar. It’s all good music.

That’d be Gram Parsons influence on Dead Flowers, see also Wild Horses. Could the Band be an early example of Americana. The Black Crowes do some excellent band covers when playing live.

Hadn’t occurred to me but yes, I guess Americana is as good a genre as you could get, it includes all sorts of influences and sounds so allows for the likes of the Fleet Foxes, The Acorn, Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle, Patty Griffin, Mary Chapin Carpenter, possibly even Tanya Donelly, who’s Whisky Tango Ghost I’m listening to at the moment. Not Indy, but not folk, pedal steel guitar in there, acoustic guitar… Lovely album, highly recommended. About time the lazy cow got on with recording some new music, too.

As above, I would say Americana(although the Band was mostly Canadian) Great band though.

Reminds me of a visit to family friends in Canada. They happened to live next door to the manager of the Band. We went for a Barbeque(moose steaks) and the manager was larger than life(cowboy hat etc) But what I really remember vividly is going up to his sons room(he was the same age as me) and looking at his drum kit. He casually mentioned that Uncle Levon(lived on the other side of the lake) was teaching him to play. He then put a tape of the above song on and played along! 😯

Oddly enough I came home from the pub tonight and switched on Bob Harris and heard him playing a track from Robbie Robertson’s new album. Didn’t even know he had one coming out, it’s been so long since he last released an album. *sigh*, yet another album to add to an ever-increasing list.
