  • Is the Revo still the best Dynamo light out there?

After so long, I’m surprised it’s still in Mk1 and they haven’t updated it. And that there doesn’t seem to be much else to rival it either. I have a B&M Luxos U, which one of the pins came off on, so they’re replacing it, but I honestly don’t find it bright enough so thinking of selling the replacement and getting something else.

The other reason I’m liking the Revo is you can use the exposure red-eye which has a rating of 80 lumens. I find my Moon Comet at 30 lumens BRIGHT. The B&M backlight I had seemed dimmer than my Moon comet on it’s lowest setting. No other rear dynamo lights seem to have a lumen rating, even the Schmidt and the Supernova. The supernova triple does look quite good too..I’m putting all this on a newly acquired Specialised AWOL, which I’m really really liking!

kLite in Aus make some interesting alternatives. Have been very impressed with my Revo / Redeye combo although I’d prefer if it had an on / off switch.

I assume you’ve angled the Luxos correctly? If you’ve angled it upward at all then it’ll look very dim, but if it’s angled correctly it ought to be fine. The top edge of the beam should be at the horizon.

AFAIK the only simple-cone-of-photons dyno lights (ie primarily suited to off-road use) are the Revo, the K-Lite and the Supernova E3 Triple.

As for the rear I find the Secula Plus is fine: plenty bright enough, with a large reflector and good angles of visibility. The only time I want an additional rear light is in thick fog, and that’s primarily because I want a second one that flashes.

A good Jan Heine article here about rear bike lights. Depending on where you’re riding, brighter may not necessarily be safer… And as a fellow AWOL owner, congratulations on the new bike!

    Thanks for the replies all!

Klite does look very interesting but the exposure honestly looks better and it has the redeye rear, like I said, I can’t seem to find a bright enough rear dynamo light!

Thanks for the advice Bez, I’m pretty certain it’s angled correctly! I don’t have the Secula, I have this (not my picture!)

Steezy, it was actually partially you that convinced me to get it! I’m really really liking it thus far! I got the Elite which somehow has the wiring for the Dynamo in the fork! The only thing is, the fit doesn’t feel 100% yet. I’m not sure if the stem is too high or the bars too close, there’s a lot of variables…But yeah, really liking it 😀 and when it’s windy I’m so grateful for the weight of the bike, it feels planted and stable, I really wouldn’t like a bike too light that it would be thrown around by the wind!

cannondaleking thanks so much for the offer, but I’d rather order it from my LBS, sorry! You should have no problem finding a buyer at that price! (:

The side by side review is very interesting!! But the Klite from Travers is a ripoff, you can buy it direct from Australia including $40 shipping and it still works out £40 cheaper!

A rip off…. says the man who’s hoping not to pay taxes……

    And the handling fee .

The Exposure light was designed for off road use. It has a round beam pattern and on the road nearly had of that is wasted up into the sky. I’ve got a Luxos U and wouldn’t swap if for a Revo.
I’ve also got the new B&M iQX which is significantly brighter and smaller then the Luxos. To be honest if there’s a better road specific dynamo light out there is like to see it….

How ever the revo is a much better off road light

I have an IQ x and a revo and the revo knocks it’s spots off when you get off road

Yes. It will do. Hence my qualified statement. 🙂
But it sounds like the OP is after a road biased light

Are you sure about the klite price? The prices quoted on their site are in usd so Travers works out cheaper?

Peterpoddy, I see what you’re saying, and you’re right I do want to use for it for mostly on road if I’m being honest, but I had a LUXOS U and didn’t find it nearly bright enough however, I got a C&B seen light which operates at 800 lumens and I found that really good. The new light B&M light does look very good, the difference from the 70 lux to 90 lux on the LUXOS U was huge, so I can imagine 100 lux would be quite decently bright! I do want to do offload to though and some country roads too though I’m thinking they would be incredibly dangerous at night and probably not a good idea! I’ll probably end up going for the Revo though.

Johnnystorm, I thought it was in AUSD! If it’s in USD then it’s definitely not cheaper1

The revo rear light is good and bright, but honestly IMO the B&M ones are better. They are just as visible but drivers can actually see and judge your position using them, plus they have a huge reflector built in for extra visibility.

I had a revo on the offroad commute bike, and a B&M setup on the other.

I wouldn’t use a revo on the road if I can avoid it, ive ridden with it before and had drivers flashing lights at me when on unlit roads as its blinding. With the B&M front light they can see me fine without being blinded.
