  • is it a bad time of year to buy a puppy?

wife wants a jack russell pup, so do the kids, so im outvoted. a mate who knows his dogs has advised waiting til april, saying itll be easier to train when the weather starts improving. wife agrees, but has just been offered a pup and is torn between heart and head.

this is where the wise old sages of stw need to chip in with advice and experiences 🙂

should she get it now or wait for another in the spring?

    cheers

How long have you been planning it ?

If its a pretty spur of the moment idea then definitely wait until April .
A puppies a lot of work and Christmas is a busy time….

    Good luck

Oh and puppies for life and not just for Christmas 😆

Being there will be someone home over the Christmas holidays
I thought training would be the right time to get one.

anybody willing to give you a puppy at this time of year is not likely to be the sort of breeder i would want to deal with

spring does sound better for early training tho

I knew someone would put that! 🙂

No its not spur of the moment, I wouldn’t allow that to happen, they’ve all fallen in love with her mums Jack Russell over the last few months and are desperate for one.

    Thanks 🙂

Edit: soobalias why do you say that about breeders?

Who is going to look after the puppy 7 days a week, for the rest of its life, do you go to work and can the dog go to.

There are so many duimped animals around christmas and the summer holidays when peeps suddenly realise they dont want them, as they cost money, and are a nuisance.

Ps anyone want a 17 year old cat, with no teeth, swop for new bike.

any time is a good time, the more time you can give the puppy the better, most importantly disipline when behavior get out of hand, while you are there than coming home to a destroyed house and not being able to catch them in the act and stop them. They will love you for it. Down side is cold weather not that it bothers the dog going out its us. Bottom line if you put the effort in you will have a great companion for all the family.

What’s the difference between normal and parsons? Temperament or just looks?

    Longer legs 🙂

More proper dog than floor sweeper, seriously if you want an all round dog that can run all day and very intelligent get a Parsons, great dogs, super temperament and not yappy like their short legged breathren

About 6″ in height and a whole world of better temperament parsons wins hands down.

thanks for that, i agree we should prob look into the parsons then. as you rightly say, its for life so have to make sure its the right one.

and i take it then that the time of year doesnt really matter as long as we’re prepared to put the work in?

Again Rocket speaks the truth very low stress dog or ours is
doesnt mind half a day at home alone and doesnt eat the furniture

likes playing in the fields digging sleeping and steak ( well anything I am eating over his own food) .

dislikes fireworks balloons and cardboard boxes .

they can be a bit selective deaf when on a rabbit chase or a scent trail

Puppy cage and socialisation are the key things for a relatively hassle free start

Selectively deaf indeed, but thats part of the breed, they were bred to hunt underground out of sight of their owners, so they think for themselves

I don’t often flame on here or anywhere else, but never heard such garbage

the decisions about buying or selling a pup are no different at this time of year than at any other. we have just sold 10 golden retrievers to great homes and refused to sell to 2 possible buyers because they didn’t feel right – but the time of year had nothing to do with it

just remember the old Korean proverb

a dog is not just for christmas, with a bit of luck the butties will last you ’till boxing day.

I’m with soobalias on this. Many rescues won’t rehome at this time of year either.

just thinking now about shedding hair. is this a problem at all with jack russells? must admit, although im backing my wifes decision, i dont like the thought of the carpets and clothes being covered in dog hairs, and the house smelling.

can you put my mind at rest or is it something id have to get used to?

dolcered, i can understand that to some degree. i assume youre talking about abandoned pups etc bought on a whim for christmas?

but should that stop genuine people from getting one? dunno what the answer to that is really…….how do you check peoples credentials to own a dog? :-/

Depends on the breed. No shedding at all, nor any doggy smell from our Doodle. Apart from the odd house clearing fart if he’s been eating horse shit.

How bad are jack russells at shedding hair?

any dog no matter what the breed, will at some point come in covered in mud shit whatever and make your home messy, all dogs smell doggy

My jack russell sheds a bit, not too bad though, would second the cage and socialisation, mine was born in a rescue centre and came to us at 4 months old, don’t think he’s a parsons but he does have long legs…

Have a look at a site called dogpages. More than enough stories of dogs looking for new homes on there.

Hair: Just expect to run the vacuum round daily. If thats too much trouble, then you’ll have to consider one of the few breeds that don’t drop hair, or get a short hair cat 🙂

I’ve got a Jack Russell. Brilliant with the kids, and he’ll run round the hills all day when we get the chance. Would definitely have another. Super loyal too.

Also, small dog on dry food = small hard non-smelly poos.

Nope, totally disagree – some do, and some don’t.

I’ve previously had short hair dogs and they seem to drop hair but are very clean – now we’ve a longer haired one (working cocker) and while he doesn’t ever loose hair, he seems to think that the correct cleaning method is rubbing himself against clean things…

+1 for something with longer legs, if you’re wanting one that will keep up with your MTB.
