Is dual ply the only tyre for the lakes?

Was up in the Lake District at the weekend, rode Helvellyn, a natural route round Grizedale Forest and had a go at high street.
Coming down high street I got about 500m till I got a pinch flat, swapped innertube for a "DH" 2.3 innertube and got another pinch 20m later.
While trying to fix the inner tubes I also found a gash in the tread.

Rear tyre was a brand new (helvellyn was its first ride) 2.1 crossmark with Exo protection at 40psi.

I'm planning on going tubeless, possibly with a new stans flow rim, so will this cure my pinch flat woes or is dual ply the only way to go for my holidays in the lakes?

other info - rim is a Mavic XM719, bike is a 165mm travel last herb FR and I'm probably about 75kg with kit.

If you are going to do Walna scar a slick tyre will now be fine.
Seriously though I was in the same boat as in nip punctures so I went getto tubeless on a ardent 2.2 exo and it's been ( touch wood) fine.

I'd go with a wider rim and tyre and dual ply but I'm 15kg heavier and have all the grade and delicacy of a brick

You will certainly puncture less with dual ply fitted, but I'd still up the ante and go for 2.3+

I did a week in the Lakes with Trout in July & single ply tubeless Ignitors on XM819s were fine zero punctures including Helvellyn decent down Dollywagon.

If you got another pinch flat 20m after fitting a new tube, id hazard a guess you didn't pump it up enough...

I weigh over 16 stone, and ride reasonably hard/clumsily in the Lakes quite a bit. Since going tubeless ive never had a problem. 819s/HRs or now Stans Flow rims with Bonty Big Earl wets, all single ply but 2.3+

Man in skinny lightweight tyre puncture shocker. Not the correct tool for a job like that a crossmark, asking for trouble.

Jambo - Well that was my thought, but it was up at about 40psi so said the gauge. Upon squeezing the tyre it had more pressure than my front which was around 30-35.

Snaps - Dollywagon descent was fine (got a vid of that one too) as was many of the speedy bridlepaths in grizedale, just this nasty one up on high street.
Maybe it was just a particularly nasty rock and not similar to my usual pinch flats.

Devs - I realise but as most of my riding is cotswolds I thought i'd buy something more suitable for down here with the Exo protection and high pressure to help with conditions elsewhere. Seemed like a fairly sensible choice at the time.

I was up in the Lakes a couple of weekends ago and my single ply tubeless minions on flows survived Borrowdale Bash, Whinlatter and a tour of Coniston (including mostly pre-sanitised Walna Scar) intact.

Then I tore the rear tyre doing a bunnyhop in the Surrey Hills on sat.

But do give tubeless a go, worth the extra faff for the months of puncture free riding beforehand for me.

Bigger volume tougher tyre required for rocky stuff. I ride tubeless all the time but you would still need a more appropriate tyre for that, or mince down it of course! The more out there you are going the better you need to be prepared. I did CBM on a hard tail recently. I put a 2.5 HR full blown UST on the back as the descent looked like the dance of the dying bicycles the last time I did it with all the upturned bikes. Bad move - I got eaten by midges waiting at the bottom for all the wheel dingers and patch merchants! :-).

When I get my act together I'll write a proper review of it. It is really lovely but I never want to touch the brakes on it and that leads to the creation of threads like this one!

On my first ever Lakes natural ride on Sunday doing the Borrowdale Bash I managed to get a cut through a ramped block on the rear 2.25 Crossmark which I was running tubeless. I then rolled it off the rim about 500m later as I hadn't seated the tyre properly. A little bit later I then got a double pinch coming down the rocky descent by Castle Crag.
If I was riding there all regularly I would changed to wider rims and UST tyres but it's not worth it for an occasional visit.

Never had an issue riding on 2.1/2.25 Nobby Nics/Racing Ralphs in years of Lakes riding. And I weigh about the same as you...
