no. I think you might be better off with a roadbike if that's a concern.
I don't think Fat or CX bikes are versatile at all, depends how you like to ride tho.

That was kind of my thinking, hence the idea of mixing up the two ideas to make for a more versatile solution. I'm thinking that the ability of the fat tyre to conform to the road surface should make for relatively low rolling resistance compared to, say, a mountain bike knobbly or semi-slick? Just thinking aloud really.
Always wanted one Maybe buy one to ride over my place in Spain
and ride the Coast of Costa Blanca not in one day though.
I don't get snow and ride mine as much as any of my other MTBs.
If you like a laugh, it's for you...............
tried a half fat and played on another mans big fat one, it's fun but my brain can't get over the weight penalty, so there will be some fat fronts and rears plus rubber comming up soon.
They're not dreadful on the road imo, but there's a world of difference between a monstercross bike and a fatbike imo

^ that!
No matter how much I think I'm going at a decent lick on a CX bike, tourer or hybrid-ised MTB, the feeling of (relatively)effortless speed on a proper road bike is always refreshing.
I see plodding along softer surfaces slower as more of a chore than a laugh! MTBs are slow enough already without hunting out even slower terrain!

I want one a lot, however I should be moving to Colorado in a couple of years so I'm going to have to wait until then I think.
The OnOne bike which was posted the other day looked nice, though not available yet.
Not seeing many show of hands here..
I nearly had a tar-pit style death on our last ride
starting to think a fatbike might suit our "trails"
So a road bike will be faster on the road than a fat bike?
He knows his stuff :S
