Is there some application out there where i can drop in a list of IP addresses and it will plot them all on a geographical map for me?

problem with IP addresses is that unless you have a ststic ip and your ISP publishes who it’s allocated to and where you just end up being shown as being wherever your ISP locates their kit.

    Where’s their head office, hm?

    Not in London.

And my IP registers correctly for other location based services through the web. So I guess the point is that site is wrong as Molgrips also found.

So, IPs can’t reliably be tracked to a location?

So, IPs can’t reliably be tracked to a location?

Accurately? By ISPs yes, by mere plebs like us no.

Yes they can be, you can buy packages which supply a database of IP addresses matched to locations if you need to do it commercially.

Ipligence is no more accurate than any other services really – maybe it will divulge the town name but that’s as far as the granularity will go. The stuff you see on TV about tracking the IP and hacking the gibson with the secondary firewall is horseshit.

Town name is all I need

compared to the other two linked on here, one of which has me in London the other in Birmingham, ipligence has my city correct. But agreed, city is as close as you’ll get to an exact location.

Of the three checkers, they have me in Oxford, Dartford and Cardiff! All incorrect.

Cougars ‘Infosniper’ put me very close, just the next village away. I’m in France

Iplocator puts me in a place called n/a in Germany, which is apparently under a tree in the middle of the countryside in Hesse.

which I was sat under a tree in the middle of the countryside.

Which is what I said back there. ^^

It’s just not possible to do it as an end user with any sort of reliable accuracy. There are various methods of making an educated guess but the bottom line is that the only people who know exactly where you are will be your ISP, who can match up IP and connection time to a given customer subscriber line.

IP is pretty useless in regards to locating you accurately – when I was with Virgin ADSL, I was apparently in Southampton….. despite sitting in London.

All depends on where the ISP pops up on the interwebs.

In theory, the ISP will be able to look at their logs, and see who the IP was given to at that time (account holder = address) – if the law requires it.

Indeed, mine above is 4608 miles out 🙂

Stangely enough, the little map in the bottom right corenr of the first image is sitting pretty much on top of Dealey Plaza where Kennedy was shot!! 😯
