What’s this like as a route on a road bike? I’m doing the five ferries today and wondered about continuing on if I have time and legs left when I get to Wemyss Bay. I know I could complete the circuit by riding back to Ardrossan and even better do a lap of Great Cumbrae on the way but I’m interest in any options. Looks like it’s going to be a great day.

From kip Marina to lunderstone bay it’s well graded fine ash, can be bypassed by following a78 to roundabout after Inverkip and turning left on to cloch road. from lunderston bay you are on pavement marked with cycle lanes/road through gourock and on to Greenock. Nice views over to cowal, holy loch, roseneath, Helensburgh. A nice alternative would be a long climb from Inverkip to loch thom/Cornaless and drop into Greenock from there. Both route should be ok on a road bike.
