What exactly was wrong with a normal headset and BB?

About all I can think of is no threads to strip in a BB shell and slightly larger weld area on the top tube/downtube join – although I never had any problems with either of those things…

Well that’s my take on it too.

make is scary for people to DIY fit/remove.

actually works very well as a fitting solution – lots of things are press fit in situations were threads would be problematic.

and talking of which – threads can cause lots of problems, including alignment problems. Press fit stuff will be perfectly aligned.

+ once fitted you will be less likely to replace the whole lot and resort to buying overpriced replacement bearings that cost more than a new headset.
