    Any one know what Aluminium grade is used on most of their bikes, M3 in particular.

    I know the socom is a proprietary variant of 6061. Google ea6x for the spec. Being 6061 it's supposed to be heat treated, which may affect what you do with it.

    I'll be welding the infamous broken socom next week hopefully, I'll let you know how that goes…

    I can only think that the M3 is similar.

    Will check out the specs and look for a heat treatment temps etc.

    if any one knows exactly what the m3 is please let me know.

    p.s. if that is the same ktc I bought a patriot off, that was a great bike did the job out in the mega.

    I'll be welding the infamous broken socom next week hopefully, I'll let you know how that goes…

    All boxed up and ready to go mate, may get it out today with DHL (hopefully!), or might end up being Monday. Will be interested to see how your repair goes, I still feel a twinge of 'disappointment' that I'm not hanging on to it 😆

    It all depends on whether socom heat treat after the welding, if they don't then it will be fine, but I really doubt that they would not heat treat.

    Look at it like this:
    Heat treated 6061 T6 has a yield strength of 270-290 MPa.
    Non-heat treated 6061 -O temper has a yield strength of about 60-70 MPa which is about 25% of the heat treated yield strength.

    Near the weld there will be regions that are effectively O temper…

    seems to be quoted for Intense frames.
    Wether or not in T6 condition? or T4

    Nope. Crack initiation and Crack growth rate strongly dependant on yield strength, Stage three crack growth which what essentially leads to failure is strongly dependant on micro-structure effects – massively varied due to welding and again proportional to yield stress.

    EDIT Stage three is also known as Stage C for all you googlers..
