Direct Line are quoting me £500 for car insurance. It's competitive but I saw an ad today for 20% off, positioned as an introductory offer.
Can they stop me from not renewing my existing policy and taking up this offer? i.e. is it legal?
I remember something about Halifax trying to do something similar with mortgages about 10 years ago and being told they couldn't withhold offers from existing customers...

No they can't stop you cancelling, they could if they wish not let you renew at the reduced price though as they can refuse any business they wish. Also don't believe that it'll be 20% off your renewal price, could be more, could be less, just run an online quote with your details to find out.

shop around and haggle on the phone, also if you have house etc insurance with DL you should get discount for that.
