Does anyone know, if I am borrowing a car off a friend for a week can I insure myself with my insurance that is a different company the theirs, so the car would have two policies.

You would have to check your policy to be honest.

What normally happens is that if your policy allows you to drive another vehicle it will only be with third party cover. The fire and theft cover would be provided by the owner’s policy and there would be no own damage cover.

Sort of like a hybrid policy.

I want fully comp as going to be taking it abroad for a week.

Will depend on insurance company and whether they want to insure the risk.

some insurers will underwrite this sort of risk but the additional cost is often prohibitive.

Will also depend on what sort of mileage you intend to cover and the value of the vehicle you are borrowing.

May find that an insurer will think that you might be a risk due to potential high mileage in an unfamiliar vehicle on unfamiliar roads.

I agree with Margin Walker given the extra about taking it abroad.

I think that you may well end up paying a very large premium as it is not something a mainstream insurer would likely underwrite and a specialist would charge extra.

So saying that, it would be interesting to hear what your insurance company says.

Had a similar-ish situation a few years ago. I had my name added to the owners insurance for the period – most insurance covers EU countries anyway.
Not much extra on the insurance – cost more to change the details on the policy IIRC.
Make sure you have a letter stating you have permission to drive the car and take it out of the UK.

Who are you insured with?

I know Swiftcover sell ‘Temporary Additional Vehicle’ policies, which I suspect includes European driving also.
