P.S and its harder with black cats, but check thoroughly for fleas. Use light colored bedding and if you see blood spots you have them.

Don’t know. They far too timid to come close, though the bigger one is more willing to be stroked. The small one is really scared.

Will keep a look out – good call! What age can they be treated with anti-flee stuff?

Food – little bits more often. If you let them over eat they will get the shits.

Also the more interaction with you feeding them the better. Get ready for them to disappear somewhere and not find them for a day so I would keep any doors shut if they are not already confined to one room and gradually give them more rooms to explore so you don’t lose track of them.

The wood pellet litter tray is less dusty than the granules, see what they take to. At the moment it’s more important they use the litter tray. Newspaper in the bottom, be prepared to start shopping at Waitrose so you can get the fattest paper free each day as well as the free weekend magazine to use in the litter tray.

Socialise, socialise, socialise. And yes, neuter them. The first thing the vet will do is scan them, chances are they might be from cat that has left home to have kittens so they might not be registered.

If you do put 2 trays out you will probably find they both want to use the same one anyway so see how it goes.

Oh and if you have any leather sofas sell them now. Protect any wood they might use as a scratching post and as soon as you know you are keeping them get a good scratching post and teach them to use it.

Flee stuff – vet not supermarket.

If you keep them I recommend Advantage spot on for fleas. Works great for my three and now the dog too. Get mine from Animed Direct. £10 for 4 sachets.

Cheers Andy – that’s really useful. EDIT – and loddrik!

Vet appointment booked for Monday. Leaflets dropped around the village.

    Cats sleeping and I’m chilling….

You can get kitten flea treatment, but be careful, get it from the vet. Fleas can really set kittens back. They will get more friendly as they feel safer. I would guess that you have a boy and a girl judging from the relative sizes.

    Thanks hels. Will do that.

Apparently lots of cats in village but I’ve only ever seen our neighbours. Let’s see if anyone claims them….

I’m suspicious about the black Tom – is it a real Tom ? Maybe somebody is trying to give the kids back to their dad…..

I’ll ask the neighbours – they’re retired and seem to have a good idea of what’s going on….

Well, the leaflets dropped through letterboxes have worked: the owner has just come round.

Mrs North is quite affected, in spite of trying hard to become attached. It’s the right thing, though it’s a shame – they were sweet little things.

Better cancel the vet’s appointment and think about whether we try and find a cat (or pair) we can keep and call our own….

Great thread, OP. I’m glad it all worked out well.

Yup. Pleasant & refreshing change from the usual tedious bickering to be found on multi-page threads.
Now you’ve got the cat starter kit, go on and get a pair from a rescue place. You know you want to…

My wonderful other half had been really touched by having the cats. You’re right drlex, we have the starter kit and some amazing help and advice.

We’ll get on with the building work to our house and make sure we install a cat flap so that we can welcome one into our home.

I should have said this before: thank you everyone for your help and advice. It had been invaluable during our 17 hours of cat ownership. We really appreciate it.

has no one pointed out yet that they know where you live and what you smell like now so they’ll be back, perhaps not tomorrow or the day after but stand on me, they’ll be back.

Well that’s a crap ending to the story 🙁

BTW why did you drop leaflets through letterboxes ? If they cared they would have dropped missing kitten leaflets through letterboxes.

It ends, or begins, when your 4 rescue cats team up and drag an abandoned hamster in. As said hamster fights off said cats, you leave the rehoming to your daughter and end up with 4 + 1 refugees…

+1 for blue cross. That’s where our pair came from. You just wander in, and the cat(s) choose you.

Anyone opened a book yet on how soon the OP will have become the proud owner of a kitten? 🙂
