  • Instagram – account disappeared, inept service, anyone else?

Tried to log in last week, didn’t recognise my password, then when it sent a password reminder it wasn’t to my email address (you can see the first and last letter).

So, I assume the account is hacked. Go through the process of reporting this, they ask for a jpeg of me, holding a piece of A4 with a code written on it they sent me, my insta id, email address and name. Did that, still nothing.

They say they need the email address that the account was set up with, I only have one email address, but it’s an automated service so you can’t reiterate this to them. No customer service email address, no Twitter or Facebook presence to main at, so basically I’m snookered.

Anyone ever had this and resolved it? I just don’t want to lose the pics or my contacts, spoke to lots of cool folks on there, even met some of them.

Don’t get me started. Mine was hacked and I went through an immense effort with them to get to the point you are at – far more effort than it should have been.

After a few months on a new account, I found my re-named hacked account as it was still “followed” by a friend of mine. Now a porn mistress with promises of free stuff, it still has all my pics. I reported it several time to INstagram, and write them a stroppy email pointing out that they were willingly letting a hacker have access to my content and not performing any action to prevent it being abused, nothing,

Its the reason I no longer post pics of my family on thier or facebook.

Aye, It really is soul destroying, trying to get in contact with them.

    Isn’t Instagram free?
I’m just wondering what they owe users?
Not a pop at anyone in particular, but surely their interest is with the advertisers that I assume occupy the site, no?

It’s why I only upload copied images I’ve saved down locally.

If it gets hacked, I don’t care, if they take the content I’ve posted then so what I’ve still got copies.

    Just create another account.

STW Forum is free, would you be expected to be treated immorally here with no recourse?

If I hacked your STW account and used it to advertise sexual favours with you details still asssociated would you be happy and leave it that way, or contact the STW mods and expect something to be done about it? And, how would you feel if I aquired iimages of your family to do with what I will? And then if said mods ignored you, would you feel aggrieved?

I appreciate thats the risk you take posting images on such a site, which is why I stopped doing it, doesnt make it right through.

It’s not the pics per se I’m bothered about, it’s all the contacts tbh…

    Instagram is owned by Facebook.

Advertising hasn’t kicked off that much on Instagram yet unlike on FB, but their interest is in the data you are sharing. Places you go, hashtags you mention. Valuable for people looking at trends. Then there are companies interested in pics showing off their company/service etc. If your FB account and Instagram are linked then there’s a wealth of information there and that can drive advertising on FB. Contacts are very valuable also. It’s data connecting people where they can work out what type of person likes what, who are friends of friends. Information that can be sold.

So it’s in their interest to maintain the data, not lose it. Data is valuable (your privacy on the other hand is not).

Personally I wouldn’t be bothered, I don’t pay and accept that STW write the rules. If someone hacks my account and uses the details associated with it, I’m comfortable that it wouldn’t have any effect on my day to day life in the slightest. Even if it were one of Donald Trump’s entertainment girlies selling their skills in the name of captainsasquatch.

I never said it was right. Just wondering why a free service should bust a gut in the customer service side of things.

Contacts or “likes” or following/followers ?

I get it, that’s actually a bit of an arse. You must use if far more than I do, pics only for me.

    No help, tried other forums/websearch??

    Really not true.

Zero adverts in my Instagram feed. Posts from people I follow. Nothing else.

Of course there’s social engineering where a company may have a feed, so you follow them and that’s of course advertising, but Instagram/FB aren’t selling advertising space to do that. I only get those adverts if I follow those feeds.

Companies buying accounts is another matter, but they’re not buying from Instagram, they’re buying from companies who create fake with fake followers. Again, Instagram isn’t making money directly from this.

FB on the other hand is showing targeted recommended posts and pushing trending posts to the top of feeds, based on your activity, and they sell this facility to advertisers.
