  • Indexing gears without a barrel adjuster?

I have put an old X9 mech on the back of my CX bike to increase the range and to stop the chain dropping/clattering on rough stuff.
It seems to work quite happily with my Red shifters. However the shifters don’t have an adjuster to fine tune the shifting and neither does the mech.
Any advice on how to get nice smooth indexing. Sorry if I am missing something obvious.

As above, or modify the cable tension by moving the mech before tightening the cable.

So that’s what the whatsit is in the dropper post cable.

And a couple of different models from Jagwire:

On a similar note, does anyone know of any of those adjusters that have nice incremented turning like the shimano barrel adjuster on a rear mech, say, has? I have one in line for a front road mech and it seems to rotate of its own accord from time to time.

dunno, but I’ve got that BBB adjuster on mine and it seems to stay where I put it.

Those that say “indexed” on the Jagwire website are indexed; I’ve only had the BSA053-like ones and the clicks are pretty weak, not sure about BSA044.
