    Terrifying. Then fantastic!

Saw it first at the above link. Bigger video with full explanation of scenario is at http://vimeo.com/6581009 and that's probably the better one to head to.

Sheesh. I hate riding in deep pow because of this. And what's really scary is that even shallow pow over a fairly firm slab can break. Those guys looked experienced and I bet they did an avvy assessment – you just cannot tell by looking sometimes.

Personally I wouldn't have set foot on any of the slopes shown at the start of that video. They all looked far too loaded for any sensible action, even without digging any assessment pit.
Mind you, I do come at this from a mountaineers perspective and as such avoid deep soft snow at any costs, regardless of avalanche conditions 😉

I was actually at a talk on backcountry safety given by Will Hughes (Vans team rider) on Saturday at the snowboard show.

He mentioned those AvaLung things that the guy in this video is using.

Seems to me that the biggest issue is getting that valve into your mouth during a slide and then keeping it there!

I've buried myself a couple of times, its very scary despite being only inches from the surface
