I’m amazed at the amount of work some people put into restoring and modding cars at home. I’d be scared to even start such a project

Here’s one I found, an RX8. It’s not really to my taste at all, but I’m impressed at the amount of work going in to it

He’s not really doing self-builds any more, but my brother restores old Suzuki SC100 and Frontes.

Impressive work – but why do people under/over tyre wheels?
He might have 315 on the rears but he’s still far short of where it needs to be for the width of those wheels.
Good luck keeping the beads seated… I’m guessing he knows that though which is why he commented “won’t be using these wheels on the track…..”

I get it on classics, but modern stuff, no.

I presume it’s more that they are his ‘nice’ wheels than any issues with beads popping.

Stretched tyres came out of drifting to reduce sidewall flex, then became a way of fitting wider wheels and tucking the tyres to stance a car.

I’ve run plenty of stretched tyres and so have my mates, NEVER seen a tyre unseat.

Seen plenty personally – you are actually taking the tyre outside of it’s design. It “might” reduce flex – I doubt it in reality.
Personally, IMO and that of the tyre guys I know it will cause it partially as the sidewall isn’t being allowed to support the wheel/car as it’s designed to do. The bead will be at the wrong angle to seat correctly against the rim for a start.

I appreciate all the effort that’s going into the RX8 but a bit too ‘Max power’ for me , at the opposite end of the spectrum there are some awesome skills being shown with this unusual resto to a MK1 Cortina:-

But the stretched tyre thing is so ‘scene’, you’re just too old to understand. Haterz be hatin’…. 😉

My friend has an Mk2 RS2000 with Xpack body kit that we took to the Alps last year. Took us a few months to get it ready as it was hidden in a bubble for 10 years. There was so much that we did, it would be quicker to list the bits we didn’t touch! It didn’t miss a beat with the 2,000 miles we did.
Here’s a pic, points for knowing the Chalet 😉

He’s bought another one that needs some TLC, nearly every panel has rust. Once the body is fixed we’ll look at putting an S2000 engine and gearbox in and making it a legal track day car. It’s a few years off yet though!

Did you do laps in the RS2000 after biking? – some good hairpins heading up to St Foy station etc 🙂

Maxtorque – that is a hell of a project.

After fettling cars I now feel that once a project goes past being easily replaceable the fun is lost. If you are going to exploit the potential of any car you are going to bend a few along the way. Disposable income would help with my issue!

MT that Seat is absolutely bonkers! I can 100% definitely say that the RS2000 we are modding will be very tame by your standards! Have you finished it and are you planning on rallying it?

Maxtorque; seriously one of the most fascinating and impressive builds I’ve ever seen.
I work as a sensors and embedded dsp specialist, now you’ve made me want to take that into Motorsport!

I think there should also be a mention for Andy Burtons Peugeot Cosworth, also banned from rallying by the MSA (bunch of *****)

Had a gander at Andy Burtons Peugot Cosworth too. That is / was a hell of a sounding car. Looking forward to seeing footage of MaxTorques Ibiza in action too.

Same here, i work in motorsport and have self built my 400+ bhp Sunny Gti-R sprint/hillclimb car but that build is in a different league with amazing attention to detail 😯
