I'm after a workstand - any recommendations

I'm looking to buy a workstand and after some opinions on the various models on offer. I've got a specialised hard rock and orange alpine and obviously the stand will need to suit both. I'm thinking that the type that holds via the seatpost will be best due to the difference in frames. I'm also looking for something that will be ok with the weight of the alpine on it. I don't want to spend too much but at the same time i don't want to buy cheap and get a flimsy bit of kit that won't last.

Not really bothered between freestanding or wall mounted, considering both

Anyone got any recommendations or stands to avoid?

I've had the Park Tool PCS 9 for a couple of years. No fancy quick clamp but good value and build to last a lifetime. You can get them for £80 to £90

avoid the revolution one. I've got one and i wish I didn't.

EDIT: it comes in many guises and brands but the one i have is falling apart after 2 years average use.

I did wonder what the cheap Park PCS9 would be like when you see much more expensive models on offer, might be worth a go then

I got a PCS9 at Christmas ready for my new bike build. Very pleased with it. Very well made, I would have thought well up to the job of holding your Alpine.

I have no experience of other stands, but I really have to ask myself why I didn't get one before. Having now owned one I would say it's an essential tool if you can afford one.

I have a stand from Decathlon, it clamps the bottom bracket / downtube and is cheap and effective but not as good as one that clamps the seatpost.

pay the extra and get the park PCS10 as it folds and is more beefy.

the pc9 is a very robust stand, folds up enough to be easily stashed away or fit in a car and has a great clamp.

Just ordered the PCS10, looks a bit more beefy as you say and also has the option of a tool tray. probably a wiser choce as the alpine is made in halifax from girders.

I have stayed away from the bottom bracket mounted ones as the tube on the specialised curves right by the BB. Not sure if these would work well on both bikes.

LOL, I did try making a BB mounted one myself but getting a frame to fit the spesh and alpine was tricky. It wasn't long before I smashed it up and laughed at my shoddy effort

The Park 9 has a clamp that 'winds' in and consequently adjusts to any size - for the Park 10 you need to adjust it if the tubes (etc) to be clamped 'differ' in size...

To clamp my son's Norco DH I need to use the frame, as the post has none showing.

I've the 9, and would recommend it.

This was on the classifieds this morning, but I think its way over priced. It wouldnt take much effort to make a stand and base for it if you didnt want to wall mount it.

I bought one of these for about £100 on ebay ten years ago.

in my workshop I have 4 Kestrel (UK made) Model-E steel floor stands which sell around £400 each, these are seriously overbuilt bits of kit and very common to most UK bike shops

at home?

I have a basic Park PCS-9 and its a fantastic home repair stand, no complaints from me at all

at home you are not constantly clamping bikes into your stand (unlike being at work..in a bike shop's workshop) and so the PCS-9 clamp works just fine for occasional use

I've got the park pcs9, tbh not having a garage means I have to leave it disassembled in the shed and I'm more used to leaning the bike against someting in the garden when working on it or occasionaly hanging the bike from the rotary drier - having done this for a while somebody got me one of those mechanics telescopic stools on castors with a tool tray and that's been realy handy (bad back, bending over to fix bits exacerbates it).

I remember those kestrels, used to have one when i worked in Halfords. Seriously beefy bit of kit and as you say, over engineered but will last years no doubt

I got one of the Lidl one's for £20, after i'd drilled an extra hole and put a massive bolt through it i can't fault it at all.

Crundi - bought one of those ones (floor mounted version) for a mate. He says it holds fine, but the screw in clamp is a pain, as opposed to the fast-clamp on my one. Great VFM though!!

dantsw13 - I can see how a quick release lever would be nice although once my bikes locked in a position, would I really need to move it again? I'm not sure it's a feature I'd miss.

I made my own, and most probably well over engineered it.
It'll probably hold up a Motorcycle too!!

Cost me ZERO, as it was from scrap metal. Just 2 lengths of box section, one slides in the other, Internal box has a bar inside it threaded, which allows the M10 threaded bar to go in. Cap off the end and put a 3 star turning handle onto the bar.

SOme angle iron for seat post clamps. Lift your bike up, clamp it in bikes going no where.

That's not over engineered, If i had made my own it would have been from RSJ's and oak sleepers.... and still fallen apart first time it was used
