For both skiing and biking, i'm thinking probably somewhere less than an hours drive from the airport (probably Geneva) which makes the PDS attractive?
Any other suggestions.

If you were gonna buy a place in the alps, where would it be?

Bourg D'Oisans would be good, 90 mins from Grenoble, at the bottom of Alpe D'Huez, 30 mins from Les Deux Alpe and La Grave and at the bottom of an iconic Tour De France climb.
If I could ignore logistics, Les Arcs. Great singletrack, great skiing and close enough to other resorts to keep things fresh.

To use a lot or rent a lot? Fopr business PdS works, for personal use, I'd be looking for something a bit more isolated.

If being close to GVA was the priority, I'd go for Chamonix. Not a big fan of PdS for either snowboarding or mountain-biking.

Short distance from Geneve? Le Tour or Vallorcine. Maybe Verbier area if you could exterminate the clientele that populates the place over the winter.

PdS for me. Easy drive, easy to fly to. Its a fantastic ski resort and great fun in the summer. Very good rental potential, too. Its also very expensive, though.

Are you sure? The chalet we are staying in this summer goes for £6k - £7k per week in ski season, that's 20 weeks/year according to their bookings page and its already getting booked up for next year!
If you really don't want to rent it out then you need to look for somewhere cheap or already have too much money

when are you looking to buy?
the army are moving out of bourg st maurice next year (i think), leaving a fair bit of property on the market at once - sure to have an effect on prices, i'd have thought. i prefer the biking here to morzine too (moved here today, from morzine in fact!). enjoyed the skiing here too (but also enjoyed pds)

Les Gets ... we have had a place there since 2005 & love it ! MTB in the summer is excellent and I have just skied there for 4 months last season.

Ton, I'd heard that too. Are you allowed to ride near there (e.g., GR55) or is it all national park with steep fines for bikes?

I bought in Morzine some years back and haven't once regretted it.
Excellent location, and although the skiing's a bit useless unless you've had a really good dump, you can always get to higher ground very quickly. When there's good snow it's great for family-friendly tree-skiing.
The mountain biking's a bit the same - the local DH is OK, and is so easily accessible it's just not true. Getting over to Chatel etc for some more challenging stuff is easy with the lift system.
I bought with a view to family use, so it had to be easy to get to, be a good base for other things (there are loads of things for kids - aeriel walkways, a 50m pool, caving, white water rafting, ice skating etc), plus have a reasonable supermarket and be able to used whether or not you had a car.

Chamonix - for the riding, climbing, mountaineering and 2 curry houses (though very average at best). Proper town, not a ski resort. Less Brit tourists too.

If you've been to Italy biking and you aren't fussed about being in the back of beyond, then I'd say Molini. The best biking in the world IMO. Techy natural trails that aren't battered up. Year round riding.
