Such is the 1 dimension of posting on a forum. He said what he said, you can only reply to what you have to work with, words. When managing people no one is perfect, least of all me. I have base principles I try to manage staff by, but then character and personality come into it and I'm certainly a terrible deligator and not perfect, which has reprecusions. Ruling by an iron fist can be a positive thing and people react positively to different styles of management. Make of my post what you want.

Ton, phone Bike Scene in Guisborough (01287 610735) & speak to Craggsy (Andy) tell him Jim the Geordie Yorkshireman sent you!
Posted 2 years ago # -
I wouldnt put it all down to mistakes or forgetting to do it. Maybe the guy was looking forward to getting into it and someone popped in to try a bike, and he ended up selling it.. but had to build it up in another size? throwing him RIGHT off?
Give it until tomorrow and you never know.. you might end up with a build thats top notch and a service you might never have guessed.

You are looking for a reasonable price. You'd give three businesses opportunities to quote wouldnt you?
No one calls just one bikeshop and says 'Ive got £Xk to spend' do they?!
Posted 2 years ago # -
hora, i do mate.
all the time.
i can't be arsed messing around trying to get the cheapest price.
that is why i phoned with a spec and asked them to let me know a price...Posted 2 years ago # -
Did they read the number back to you? At work we had a few instances of it being written down wrong so now I always read the number back to the caller.
I also right things down on a notepad by my desk so it's always visable.
Yesterday I got to work early to ring a customer back, that I'd spoken to on Sat, I'd explained it would be after 9 I called her, but due to it being potentially important I rung her early, to which she replied you don't start work until 9 she was happy I made the effort.Posted 2 years ago # -
Everyone makes a mistake or two. Its how the mistake it rectified that dictates how to continue your trading.
If they dont ring you back, then call them and speak to the manager. Base your future decisions on how that goes.

Surely you have mentally owned this chameleon now? time to metaphorically sell it on and look at a new steed?

For the very reason that I may have been busy I always tell customers to give me a call if they haven't heard back from me within the time I said I'd call. The reasonable ones don't have a problem with this. Management may be the cause of the delay ie shop understaffed, it may not be the fault of the person you spoke to. In a shop I always think its the people that have actually made the effort to go into the shop that deserve to be seen to first, annoys me when you are ignored or treated rudely by staff that are on the phone. I'd phone them back and give them the chance to apologise and find out how they are getting on. Treat them right and they should do right by you.
All this reminds me of a time when I was trying to get a bleed plug for my Hayes discs. Checked CRC, out of stock, phoned importers who are local and they said they dah them and although they couldn't/wouldn't sort me out, told me that any shop that said they couldn't get them was talking rubbish. This was then what every shop said bar one. I was very pleased especially when the guy said he'd have it in less than a week. they had said he would have to order a complete seal kit but woould just sell me the part i wanted. A week later I went in spoke to somebody else who said they don't do that sort of thing and I should just pay for the whole kit. Inconsistency annoys me.Posted 2 years ago # -

ironically the shop I use most of the time are shite at returning calls (but very good at fixing my bike at very short notice) I find that walking in with a cheery "oy tosser thought you were ringing me back " helps to remind them gPosted 2 years ago # -

so can anyone rec a good santa cruz dealer.
Ton, haven't trawled all the way through the thread, but if you're after a good SC dealer, ring Bothy Bikes in Aviemore. May not be the most local to you, but can't praise them highly enough for:
1) actually having stock of frames and bits not available elsewhere
2) doing good deals
3) being very helpful
4) brilliant after sales supportThey even have some SC carbon frame loveliness hanging on the wall waiting for a customer
Speak to David, the owner.

So i am guessing it wasnt Stif. So why not try Stif? or have i missed something?
Posted 2 years ago # -
You should have started with "I don't know if you know who I am; my name is Ton from STW...". You'd have the bike built and delivered by now (and your money banked).
Posted 2 years ago # -
Not saying you have done this Ton but what a good way of getting a cheap bike! Stick it on the forum that lbs done this and done that your not happy and all the other bike shops do there hardest to get a good price for you! Genius!

Usually I'd agree that everyone makes mistakes and it's daft to start declaring you'll never shop there again every time somebody makes a mistake that, in the end, hasn't really done any damage. As somebody else said I'd run out of bike shops to go to with that approach. On top of that they might have more immediate things to take care of that aren't so time-consuming and perhaps likely to come to nothing.
BUT people not calling back when they said they would is not a one-off mistake- pretty much every bike shop I have ever dealt with has done this all the time, which erodes my good will and willingness to wave it off and accept that nobody's perfect. It's not the odd slip up, it seems to be virtually policy. Like a lot of people I have in the past had money to spend which has gone elsewhere when people repeatedly couldn't be bothered to call back to help me buy from them. If you've said you'll do it, do it.

All the people saying that it is a pain for shops to have to call people back, well, that's fine. No one is saying that shops should always provide the service of finding out something and calling people back. But if you don't provide that service, don't pretend that you do. Same as if you don't actually bother to order things, don't pretend that you will. There's no problem if someone says 'I can't get that', or 'Give me a call tomorrow', or 'You'll have to come in to the shop' that is being honest. Saying that you'll call back, as most shops seem to, and not calling back (as most seem to also), is just stupid, and pisses people off.

"If you owned a bikeshop".....I'd only employ 18-22yr old girls as members of staff.
Posted 2 years ago # -
If you buy a lot of bikes why not use the shops you've used before?
Posted 2 years ago # -
And rename the shop 'Come, ride with me'

you, my friend are not right.............

Ton
I have to know, did you call back?
Posted 2 years ago # -
Surely this notion of ringing "for a quote" is slightly pointless.
Correct me if i'm wrong but are you gonna buy it anyway?
I doubt they'll charge you much differently to any other place who'd do the same build.Anyway.. it's rude not to return calls. Even if all you do is ring back that day and explain you've yet to deal with the enquiry... at least the customer knows you have not forgotten about them or worse still can't be bothered.
I hate places not phoning.
Garages seem to do it with cars all the time.. take friggin forever to get in touch. They should lick your ass over the phone seeing as your giving them money.Posted 2 years ago # -
Ton. If you are still looking for a Santa Cruz dealer, I used http://www.bikescene.co.uk/ for my Blur 4X a year ago. They were great to deal with.

Tony, If i was in work, i would sort it for you, special price......
but im not, so i cant... can you wait til my cast comes off...... ;0)
