Captain Beefheart – The Spotlight Kid, perhaps

Pixies – Doolittle. A bit shouty, a bit rocky, a bit lovely but all great 🙂 Plenty of other options depending on what the person normally listened to though.

Depends one what music they listen to normally really. If they hate jangly guitars and shouty lyrics Doolittle not gonna go down well now is it? 😀

hahaha, well thanks.. ok, so i will then..

    Could have been
    Pride – White Lion
Automatic for the People – REM (but someones chosen that)
Song Remains the Same (live if you didn’t know) LedZep
Reading, Writing and Arithmetic – The Sundays
August and Everthing After – Counting Crows.

    blah, blah, blah

    More Chardonnay anyone?

If they don’t like Doolittle there’s no hope for them, they probably listen to ray lamontagne and david grey (note dismissive non-use of capitals).

Anyhoo I’d suggest: Primary Colours by the Horrors.

Doolittle’s not even the best Pixies album!

I much prefer Trompe le Monde, what can be better than a concept album about space?

In the Pixies canon, everything apart from Bossanova, it would seem 😉

Well, no, but some would say Surfer Rosa’s not a full album

True, but that’s kind of the point of the question. Although if you’re playing safe you should go for something a bit dull like DSOTM. Go on, recommend me something 🙂

    I prefer Bossanova to Doolittle.

    I must be mental. 🙂

Dolittle or Surfer Rosa either is good. My partner hates “jangly guitar shit” so there’s no hope for her then! 🙄

Daphne and Celeste – We Didn’t Say That!

Includes the fantastic single “ooh stick you”

A very important album as it is the point at which the world thought pop “music” could get no worse…until Cowell pop up and gave the world “Britains with naff all talent” and “P1sspoorFactor”

    Seriously
Red Snapper – Our aim is to Satisfy
    or
DJ Shadow – Hard Sell (live)

I don’t undertand recommending stuff that people will have obviously already heard… I mean who won’t have heard the Pixies or Leftfield or bloody Marillion or David sodding Gray if they’re into that type of music?
I am going to give that one with the Spanish looking person on the cover a try though.

(oh, its like the Wannadies, but less catchy 🙁 )

Depends who your recommending the album to though. Some cool arty type who you feel you need to impress, so you’d recommend an obscure artist/album.

Or perhaps its someone from another country/continent/planet whos never listened to music before.

I made my recommendation based on someone who is interested in hearing new music.

[edit]I seem to recall Rich Penny recommending something a couple of weeks ago: I bought it.

Far too many to choose from.

But first one that springs to mind (that hasn’t already been said) would be ‘For Emma, For Ever Ago’ by Bon Iver.

It’s good if you like that sort of thing.

I’m enjoying Cosmic Gate – Earth Mover as I type this. But mostly been listening to Rachmaninov’s piano concertos recently.

Ok richpenny albums that are getting a load of playtime on iTunes for me at the minute

Still the XX by the XX. After all these months it’s still ace
The Big Roar by Joy Formidable. Big guitar riffs they’re on the edge of great things
    Tame Impala innerspeak 60s updated
Warpaint The Fool. Bliss just blissful

    I’d recommend any of those

Thing it, it has to be listened to from beginning to end, if you hear it out of sync you probably won’t like it. But as a whole it is incredible.

Definitely agree about the Trentemoller, I played that to death when I got it. I was disappointed with his followup album though which went in a very different direction.

I’d go for Basic Channel – BCD (the first one).

Cheers emsz, I’ll take a punt on the Warpaint album as it’s had two mentions now and I like your description 😉

Here’s one for your other half then:

Guarantee no shouty vocals or jangly guitars 😉 Seminal UK techno album that went under the radar for a lot of people.
