GP, seems one of the few reasonably secure fields and unlikely to be out sourced to China any time soon….

Interesting perception, mainly as it is the polar opposite of mine (apart from the China bit) – and I’m a GP.

Wine/food critic. I drink/eat enough every day to be able to spout considered tosh about it. Any openings? I could be a music critic at the same time too. Who sez us blokes can’t multi-task eh?

A year yes . I had not considered it myself but several people have recently been surprised that I wasn’t a lecturer teacher or professional trainer. Teaching children would seem to be a crap career move though. Too much like proper hard work for peanuts and tonnes of red tape

Many GP practices and most out-of-hours GP services are already outsourced, to Virgin and Serco amongst others.

I would retrain as an interpreter (as in a proper lightning-fast good one with a Masters. I’ve done a lot of “hey, nursie, you speak foreign, gissa hand” interpreting at work but it’s not the same and pays, errr, what I normally get paid ie just below national average wage)

-it’s nearly what I did do 13 years ago. Nowadays I value family/kids/school/living in Devon too much for the travel/lifestyle of that job, mind.

I wish I’d continued with rugby instead pf stopping at 25, or continued with cycling seriously from my teens til now without the rugby break.

I think either option without breaks in middle may have netted me a trophy of some kind, albeit regional to show my kids.

Pharmacist. Hugely in demand therefore pays well, civilised hours and a lot more varied a job than standing behind the counter of a retail pharmacy.

It wasn’t until I failed entrance to med school, studied Biochem and worked in the pharma industry for 6 years that I realised there was such a thing as an industrial pharmacist…..

Odd isn’t it: many responses are looking to careers that help others.

    Architect +1

From working with several over the last 18 months I’ve no doubts I’d be up to it.

Given the right training of course, but then I was never academically interested when I left school.

Just now when I’m in my forties.

Sort of plus one – except I’d like to become an architect without actually going through the faff of training to be one. I might just get some smart looking cards printed up.

Something more hands on. Cabinetmaker may be. I’d still be miserable but at least I would not be stuck in a office.

At school I wanted to be a journalist. I became a lawyer.

I’d fancy turning my hand to being a medical doc – something mechanical.

    Basically I’m your typical type-a high achiever. Even I think I’m a ****.

Either a fireman or work outside something like National Trust, ( currently office bound )

National Trust yeah I’m with you on that one….or a tree surgeon.

The fire service nope – never been one for sitting around and I like to think for myself.

    I’ll get my coat 8)

    Been a mechanical engineer (plant)

retrained as teacher (secondary – lecturers etc get pants pay compared to me even though their job may seem more rewarding!)

thinking of another jump back to renewables….

plot thickens (grass is greener syndrome I reckon)

Just roll with it and remember you only live once, if you have no commitments just think of your happiness.

Another wannabe architect here. Just designed a website for a practice and was thinking that just today as I loaded content up.

    Or plod (for the pension).

Or a lecturer (in graphic design so not a huge leap and one I occasionally consider).

If I’m completely honest then there’s no way I’d have applied myself properly and justified university when I was in my 20’s, nor would I have tolerated the hours needed if by some miracle I’d have succeeded and actually landed a job.

Though I’d also have missed out on a lot had I followed a different path.

Quite happy where I am though, sort of middle ground!

Something in science, physics and astronomy research type side. fairly bored doing what i do actually and would love to change. Problem is at 34 i’d need to put a lot of effort in doing part time study and funding myself to do it.. Don’t know if i could become a student full time again..

Wine Maker – been checking out the price of vineyards and it looks like you could make a half decent living in an area with great riding for less than the price of an average London home.
