Dunno, maybe onion (its the basis of just about everything) or butternut squash (my personal fave on its own).

Errr, haven’t you played top trumps? Surely it depends on which property you go by:

    Cost
    Nutritional value
    Aesthetics
    Flatulence side-effects
    Alternative sexual uses

    Rice.

Can be used as a starter, main course, side dish _and_ pudding! You can even make alcohol with it.

    Obviously a clear winner.

Except that rice is a grain not a veggie 😉

    The humble spud for me.

    butternut squash

    ARE YOU INSANE?

They taste OK but they are not worth the whole peeling effort. It is easier trying to get the skin off a cricket ball.

    Parsnip.

    End.

Parsnips are vile. It’s how I imagine mud would taste.

Then dont peel them, just chop up and roast.
Oh, obviously scoop out the pulp.

YOU **** WELL DO IF YOU ARE MAKING BABY FOOD OUT OF THE FECKERS.

    SQUASH MAKE ME ANGRY!

You can tell that I’ve had 3 years of doing battle with the buggers.

    …and relax

    {edit}

They are nice halved, roasted, stuffed with mascapone and sage then finished off under the grill with a parmesan topping. However, if you offer that to a baby you will end up wearing it.

agreed – butternut squash is nice cooked with the skin left on

for baby food try sweet potato instead. Much easier – and little ones love it

Potato…starter, main course, side dish _and_ pudding…tick, tick, tick and tick! Alcohol…tick!

Personally I would go with the Onion.

Broad beans. I can’t get enough of them.

Purple sprouting broccoli. Steamed, with lashings of butter and some black pepper.

Beetroot. Slow baked and served warm with goats cheese.

    Cauliflower. In cheese sauce.

Tough call between asparagus and broad beans. Broad beans probably take it because decent British asparagus is only available for about 6 weeks a year

If it was fruit the jack fruit would win hands down.

Vegetable wise, probably wild jungle taro.

Well, if we’re going to get pedantic about it, potato is a tuber, not a vegetable* 😉

*please note, I really don’t care.

    Besides, Romanesco cauliflower beats everything
