My dogs behaviour has surprised me at times. I've been there.
You think you know them then very rarely they do something really stupid and out of character.
Fortunately none of my dogs unpredictable behaviour was directed at humans - it had some issue with a pond duck and other dogs in the park.
Normally its the meakest and weakest dog out there.
I suspect the owner has learnt alot from this about her dogs and will give others plenty of room next time.Posted 4 months ago # -

I also got bitten by a dog today.
Riding through the woods, I saw a friend of my wife's out with her dogs, she pulled them towards here and I slowed down to pass. As I drew level, one of them, a wee terrier broke free and nipped my foot.
I stopped and Kate (for that is the owners name) apologised and said that he has a fear of male cyclists in yellow jackets (for that was what I was wearing). So I put my hand down for him to sniff and when I got his trust, I gave the little fella some strokes and fuss.
Maybe he won't feel so scared next time he sees a male cyclist in a yellow top.
My story has no bearing whatsoever on the OP's. Just to all the dog haters, don't get all tarry with your brushes...

My family of shotgun wielding, spaniel and hound owning, fox killing toffs would agree with TJ. Any dog that bit them whilst on a shoot would most likely be gargling on buckshot.

If any dog came towards me with teeth gnashing it would probably get an am41 in the chops. If it bit me on the arse (depending on the size of the dog) I would probably use my pump as a nightstick.
And before the sanctimonious, holier-than-thou chip in, I am an animal lover of all kinds (except in the cases of those who attack me, then it is a dog eat dog situation)

Hmmm agreed Elf. I suspect that the dog had actually been in a decaying orbit for several weeks and it was a last gasp act of desperation. The woman was shocked because she had ever seen the dog before.
You were feeding Sky jaffa cakes? You do realise chocolate kills dogs, fatally until they are actually dead and cant get up again?

Supersessions - good job, exactly what that dog needs, desensitization.
I've done a lot of work with dogs, and they are very much the product of their upbringing. If a dog is a rescue, and you haven't had it from a pup there is a chance there will be some trigger that will provoke a reaction - e.g. the man in a yellow jacket on a bike. So you should pay attention at all times to their body language (hackles, stiff tail, dropped shoulders, stalking...)
If you've had your dog from a pup, there is no reason at all and no excuse for bad behavior toward humans; they should understand they are subservient to people.
Moreover dogs should be trained from a pup to understand that biting is not acceptable, this is something they should learn from being with their litter mates and will be more obvious in pups removed too early from a litter and then not given the correct bounding from their owner.
Another issue that is seen with defensive / aggressive agitated dogs is being from a too large litter, which is more prevalent with every owner of a dog having won at least one dog show thinking it should breed and have it's pups worth a lot of money.
The point is, the problem with problem dogs is us - people. The dogs in question should be removed from the owners, or at the very least the owner should be forced to have one-to-one training and pay for it, as currently they do not deserve to own a dog.
I love dogs, but some people should not have them. This year me and my 4 1/2 year old border collie have decided to go back to training classes, to rediscover things we've become lax with, be pushed further by trainers, and to show people what can be achieved with a little time and effort (tricks, the attention required and the level of understanding you and your dog can have).
That was quite a bit serious, I did think about throwing in a joke about TJ to lighten the mood - but I do agree with him

I've been bitten in this way, small dog at a customers house, appeared friendly, I offered the back of my hand so it could smell me before giving it a pat, like a flash it had bitten me. I was sitting on the floor at the time and it was taking an interest in me and my tools. Turned out it is one of the most dangerous dogs in terms of bites...a terrier. (edit: number of bites reported, not severity)
I'm not scared of dogs at all, and have never been bitten apart from the above instance, the fear sensing thing is probably true but I would not make a habit of going around patting strange dogs, unless I am talking to the owner and the dog is obviously a big soppy softy. As soon as you offer a hand you could be seen to be interfering with the dog/invading their space/asking for it.

As a community nurse a few years ago, a patient's dog bit me on the ass one Christmas eve evening. Despite the four-day weekend that followed, by the 28th I was being approached by people from work I hardly even knew, barely containing their laughter as the enquired after the state of my bum.

For the record, I would never, ever kick a dog. I might threaten to, but I wouldn't do it unless it was ripping me to bits.

I was bitten on the arse because as I moved off I was slightly in front or level with the dogs and it was the closest part of me to them
Yes they were fairly long leads, plus the length of her arms, plus I guess they were pulling her all over the place. Not sure. I was looking ahead, not over my shoulder
