  • I set an Admin password on my son's computer…

    Full Member

…to make sure he didn’t do anything he shouldn’t.

I didn’t use any of my regular password combinations, to keep him from guessing. It worked.

    I forgot it.

I have tried downloading things from the net (Ophcrack and others), but they need an admin password to run it! He needs to d’l something in order to do his homework, and is getting stressed. Is there anything I can do tonight?

    Cheers

Until someone more knowledgeable comes along, can you tell us what OS you are using and if the password is an OS password or a bios password?

    windows?
    mac?
    linux/unix?

it would help if you could tell us which OS you are using.

Grab a copy of Hiren, or another boot disk that has “Offline NT Password Changer”

Boot off the disk, load Offline NT Password Changer and clear the Administrator password. Will take seconds to do.

    Edit: Assuming its Windows

That you say it’s your son’s computer suggests there is more than computer in the household?

Use t’other one for now? Then take it to a shop to get it fixed (you may be laughed at….)

Get the hard drive out, chuck it in another PC, back up all your files, then format/fresh install?

sc-xc I have such a disc and have just created an ISO file of it, do you have access to another pc with a cd burner?

If so send me an email and i’ll let you know what to do.

    I thought that!

Do you think it’s an Orangutan? Or an Irish chimp?

Can we all please stop monkeying around? The OP must be going ape right now!

You can force the computer to go into safe mode and access the admin from there and change the password if it’s running Windows.

I can’t think of any monkey related puns, so here is a mildly amusing photo of an angry baboon.

    Hiren cd is very useful
Lynx did a password reset tool, I’m sure there’s a few more open source ones around.
Of course if its Linux and you didn’t secure your boot menu you don’t need any tools. But I’m guessing its windows.

    try this

we use it at work all the time and it works very well indeed, free as well.

As above, I would recommend Hiren assuming its a windows device.
If for whatever reason you can’t burn an ISO then you’re going to struggle.

If you’re really panicking about this then we could potentially work out an arrangement where I hack into it over the internet but it’ll be complex and time consuming.

This. Home or Pro is also relevant.

Screw GUI tools, they all suck tbh. Or cost money.

The following will sort you out very well. Just make sure to read it very carefully and it’s a command line tool to reset any local account password. Just need a reasonable sized USB stick, then follow the instructions…

You can reset it in no time.

My first thought was that he will already have a copy of the hirren cd somewhere that he has already used to change the password.

Surely you need to set appropriate but obvious passwords, like StopWankingYouLittleSod
