this performance at the 1983 Grammys is utterly bonkers.

There was an article on it in the New York Times two days ago, and having read it, can’t believe his act was something I was unaware of at the time.

In any case, enjoy. If you can bear it.

I don’t like Jazzzzzzz, but agree that’s bonkers.

I saw that back in the day. No more bonkers than the shows Grandmaster Melle Mel or Africa Bambaataa were putting on at the time.

Natural progression from the George Clinton projects.

Electro and Hip Hop is still my bag. This holds very fond memories for me. Thanks for posting.

Yep – I’m old enough to remember it first time round!

I remember clearly trying to emulate the moves down at the local youth club, and later in the hallways at school and eventually on the high street..

That’s possibly the most 80’s thing I’ve ever seen.

I was lucky enough to see Grandmaster Melle Mel and the Furious Five (minus Cowboy) and the Jazz Café a few years ago.

The site of a room full of plump men in there 40’s all close to tears and wearing Sergio / Nike track suit tops close to bursting out at the zip didn’t detract from the occasion at all. It was a very emotional night.

There was a girl with us who was born in ’82. I assumed it would be lost on her a bit but she still maintains it was her favourite gig ever.

He did a slightly scaled down performance of the same track on The Tube, primetime Friday night TV. I bought the album Future Shock on the strength of that performance.

I prefer his earlier ‘Half Hour’ work.

    That’s very nearly an armful….

also thought he was excellent in The Love Bug.

so, is he dead or something?

I was throwing some shapes to that one back in the day.

Lino and cardboard for the win.

Very familiar with the tune, but I’ve never seen the performance. Pretty impressive, with the animatronics n’all.
