Non genuine ones often don’t work and if they work now they often stop worked when Apple do a firmware update (this applies to the newer lightning connector rather than the old style one). At least that’s been my experience!!

Aamazon Basics is a good compromise. Not too expensive and keep on working.

Echo Rockhopper’s comment- my $1 DX cable stopped working after the last iOS update. The Anker brand cables, with woven cover, have lasted better than the Apple ones.

Chose wisely and you will save money (edit Anker recommended above, their batteries are excellent so a good company ime). Our Apple ones last 3-5 years so even if the knock offs last just 1-2 you’ll be better off. We buy only original as we think they are worth the money.

The Apple ones are a bit pants. Belkin ones seem to last well.

Non-Apple-approved third party ones will produce an error message when plugged in.
