Geeks are the ones who can tell this years xtr from last years at a glance

Oh, c'mon all you need is a working set of eyes for that comparison.

and a knowledge of this years XTR , last years XTR and the difference between the two, I have the eyes bit but not the knowledge or desire to acquire it.
I tend to know what bikes the people I regularily ride with own. i dont know , or care, how many bikes I could recognise but suspect it is quite a lot.

I'm more of a trail perv. I passed a footpath sign I've never noticed before on the way back from the pub tonight. I'm Google Earthing it now!

Simon, I don't know you, but you are perhaps just a bike rider, and not a mtb rider, like Chipps said.

Well the photographic evidence is that SFB does indeed ride a mountain bike on mountains fairly regularly ( well fells anyway ) I indeed ride mountainbikes almost everyday – sometimes on road , sometimes on mountains. I am most deffo an MTBer and do not subscribe to the geekery at all.

but I only have a mountain bike (here, next to me as I type) and I only like riding it off road…

I'm glad that most men do appear to look at bikes more, I'd feel most uncomfortable if group rides that I went on were full of leering pervs like sfb. In fact, I'd probably stop going on them.

You do know that he's at least honest, and that all the others are secretly looking at your bottom?

I don't think the ladies that go on SFBs rides have a problem with him being a perv; they know he's too elderly to actually cause them any real danger. Speshly when he's not got his teeth in.

Is that a Dual-Booty system, Barnes?

and yet the women I do ride with appear to find it funny 🙂 Not least because I'm openly honest about it.

What are you using it for that requires 'watercooled i7'?

And you never answered my question:

Would you still go biking if there was never any 'totty' involved?

    Processing bottoms of course!

The number of bottoms SFB has to process requires a LOT of computer power….

DXO Pro* drives it up to 100% for hours

oh, sorry, I missed that! It's hard to give a definitive answer, but I have given up Wednesday evenings as they were unrelentingly blokey, though male only rides are very rare at the weekend, so the question does not arise. It's sexist but I'm not very keen on other men, they tend to be dull.

For someone that claims to love mountain biking as much as you say, that seems a bit odd – but then I will happily ride on my own.

I love the experience, which for me is sociable and shared – I never ride alone either – and I prefer socialising with women, or at least in a mixed group and moan like hell when no women turn up

When I was about 15 my Mom (very keen cyclist in her day) got exasperated with my mates and I tinkering about with our bikes rather more than riding them. She burst out with "You're not cyclists, you're just bike riders!". It doesn't make logical sense, but I know eggzackerly what she meant and it made me sick with shame then, and it still does now, 40 plus years later.

I guess that's why I ride 3 times a week, but do virtually no bike maintenance to this day.

BTW – why has SFB got a picture of TJ's Mrs on his wall? Trying to cause an argument?

(An argument? – with TJ?? – who'd have thought it?)

anyway, I contend that an obsession with kit does not characterise mountain bikers, and I wonder if it isn't the case that the obsessives either attach too much importance to the bits and pieces in a kind of supersticious voodoo related to their enjoyment, or don't get enough from the pure riding and need to add metal and/or rubber fetishism

Or perving over women? Presumably if it was about pure riding it wouldn't matter if you rode alone.

Or just that those of us who like bikes too get more from riding than you do. I don't see that one excludes the other. It certainly doesn't for me.

correction accepted – pure riding in company :o)
