Just wanted to spread the word on this little gem of a film. Watched it last night and thought it was brilliant. Heartwarming, funny, life affirming, well acted, beautifully shot and a great bizarre cameo from the excellent Rhys Darby.

Both Sam Neil and the young actor (Julian Dennison) are perfect in their roles. It’s directed by (and has a cameo from) Taika Waititi who also made the brilliant, but very different What We Do In The Shadows. Not watched a film that’s made me smile as much as this one did in a long time. Will definitely be watching again and keeping an eye out for Taika’s next movie.

    That’s all 🙂

A lot of little references only a kiwi would get.

I love a good kiwi film

    Try eagle vs shark

Great film, captures quite a few Kiwi idiosyncrasies very well.

If you like that then try Boy, The Devil Dared Me To, and Black Sheep. Eagle vs Shark is excellent, very odd in a similar vein to What We Do In The Shadows, but still very good.

Eagle v Shark is a great film. You can’t beat Jermain Clements. Not seen Boy or The Devil Dared Me To so thanks for the recommendations.

Great film, and I love the way Kiwi films aren’t scared to have loads of Kiwi references, very different from the “cultural cringe” when I was growing up.

The best bit was how Rhys Derby named his ute “crumpy” – after Barry Crump, who wrote the book on which the film was based, and starred in The Most Kiwi TV Commercials Ever, for the Toyota hilux.

There’s a sequel to What We Do In The Shadows coming soon: We’re Wolves. Can’t wait for that.

Good news, and due out in October unless humourless Disney execs have their way…this looks great!

Also one of the better (and cunningly self-referential) versions of the Downfall meme.

Didn’t like Wilderpeople – maybe expectations too wrong after “Shadows”.
Looking forward to Jojo Rabbit though.
And that downfall clip is pretty good. Up there with the Sick Bikes one…

We loved Wilderpeople. I though Shadows was ok, Mrs NBT couldn’t be bothered watching after the first two minutes. diff’rent strokes and all that
