  • HR bods, is there such a thing as an online job application completing 'bot'?

…a bit like ebay sniping software that monitors job vacancies and then applies for them online with a preset personal statement/references etc?

The reason I ask is that every time we (nhs rather specialist unit) advertise a nursing post on jobs.nhs.uk, we get a huge amount of applications, three quarters of which are from applicants who have clearly cut and pasted a pre-filled application into the form with no thought to the fact that they lack any of the essential qualifications or experience in the person specification, and fail to mention any interest even remotely related to our 'niche of a niche' service. General nurse in palliative care seeking a mental health nurse-only post in child psychiatry 800 miles away from where you currently work? Oh yes, usually we get a couple of those and many more…

Recently we had to close a post after less than three days after we got 70 applications; again most of these were what I would regard as completely pointless.

Is the NHS jobs website just filled with 'long/impossible shot' chancers who check it every day, or is there actually some software that takes all the hassle away and applies for every nursing post going without asking if you are interested?

Each time we advertise a job we have to shortlist in pairs, so it takes about four hours at band six or seven of your taxpayers money (ooh, about £75 plus overheads) just wading through and manually rejecting all these applications (on our system, it takes longer to reject someone than to invite them for interview, and so yes I cut and paste too then 👿 ) before we get to the people we would consider interviewing.
