I’m on about getting a Sierra to support my Cycling. I’ve always been a fan of the older car, and I reckon what with its rallying heritage taking the sierra cycling it will cope with the kind of gravelly car parks we have to deal with.

Anyone any experience of Sierras for cycling?

Haha, I used a Sierra as a bike car and it was great, seats down would swallow the bikes up, did loads of trips to Wales in it, cost £250, great till one of the rear doors rust was so bad you could just poke holes in it! Had Cozzy bumpers and everything!

There used to be one near me, white cosworth with new mondeo alloys, looked the absolute business and went like shit of a teflon coated shovel on a conveyorbelt!

I seem to remember that a Sierra estate was the stw/Chipps-mobile for a long long while; they mentioned it in affectionate but “lordy it’s old-fashioed” terms in the magazine a few years ago.

I used to love sierras when I was a kid. We occasionally had an estate one and I would sit in the back looking out the back window.

Every time I see one I am amazed they are still going as most are scrapped or turned into one of these:

One of those would make a good bike car. Just make yourself a bike rack as part of the roll over bar 😀

I’ve heard that a Sierra is quite good for going to Southern Spain for a Cycling Holiday.

I have read that Sierras are good on tarmac, particularly uphill, and can indeed cope with Forrest type roads.

Uncle had the XR4x4 saloon and it was a beast…drove from Southampton to York in it and I just seem to remember smiling all the way in it…saying that, that was 21 years ago now…

Ernie Burgoyne had an RS Cossie…apparently fastest in Central Scotland and the Police would regularly invite him to their ‘events’ so they could pace it…it looked lovely and sounded amazing.

I know someone who has a XR4x4 hatch for sale probably quite cheaply. He’s got two or three of them hanging around at the moment and was given a road legal one as part of a deal of buying another off ebay recently.

How much? No idea why I’m feeling interested…but I am!

Used to have a special edition Chasseur 1.8 estate. Funny, I was just thinking about it last night.

Heavy on juice, (owned it back in the day when petrol was not mega-expensive) but fairly wide tyres + rear wheel drive + estate weight behind the rear axle actually made it quite fun to drive!

4 adult holiday to France in it once, all luggage, 3 bikes on a carrier and 2 large canoes on the roof, so yeah, would make a good bike-car. Front bumper go ripped off by a Ciroen Safari as I pulled out into traffic on that holiday. 😳 😀

The rally heritage is really significant, Citroen always do quite well

I used to have a XR4i and it was ace, at around the same time I knew the first names of the people working in our local petrol station.

I’d deffo reccomend a Mondeo estate as you can get two bikes in the boot with wheels removed, back seats still in place, and covered over with the load cover.
