My chainring on the SS is creaking like mad and I can’t seem to stop it. I’ve changed from alloy bolts (which disintegrated when tightened) to steel ones and the ring is a Surly steel one. I’ve used threadlock but the bolts still need tightening every now and then and even then they still creak. Any solutions? (the frame is a scandal)

how do you know it’s the bolts ?

(- and, how about greasing them ?)

Definitely the bolts. It improves slightly when I tighten them up real hard and there is no squeeking when freewheeling but there is creaking when turning the pedals when out of saddle…I did apply some grease between the chainring and the spider (middleburn) when I fitted the steel bolts…

Have you checked to see if there’s any wear on the chainring tabs on the crank?

I’ve had a similar problem where the chainring bolts have been bottomed out but still not tight enough due to wear on the tabs.

grease the threads and check the other usual suspects.
