Is drilling it out the only way?

Can’t really see the picture clearly. Can you hammer a torx bit in then unscrew it?

Doesn’t look threaded.

Tap out with screwdriver in slot.

Don’t know that I would want to hammer a torx key in, would the cable adjuster bit take the strain?

WWW – do you screw those in then remove with a socket wrench?

Pretty sure the frame retainer is threaded.

Definitely try to unscrew it before busting out the drill.

Hard to see from the pic but you may be able to tap in a Torx driver as suggested above – no need to smash it in, you only need the splines to give some purchase. If not then stud extractors are deffo worth a shot.

Whatever you use, give it a good soaking in pentrating oil first (Duck Oil is really good IME or Plusgas).

Did it break whilst trying to remove it? If so then it may be too well seized to come out without drilling after all.

In your case you may well not need to drill as the thing you’re trying to remove is hollow anyway.

If you have to drill it out (I’ve been forced down this road before myself), then this set:

is really good as a replacement – ditch the downtube cable stops and just drill the braze-on to fit the threaded bit through and secure with the nut on the bottom end (see second pic from link). Still gives cable adjustment and is plastic to boot so won’t seize in again. 3 years down the line, still all good.

£2.98 from ToolStation a set of opp’ thread extractors just looked at my (unopened) pack and reckon the smallest one will just about do the job – screws in reverse thread then you can turn it correct way to extract the broken thread – for the price better than hammering in a torx

edit more or less same as wwaswas suggested from Screwfix – the Screwfix kits looks better – you could actually put that on the wall next to the lump hammer and label it “break open in emergency” – good luck
