  • How to soften a elastomer spring?

My kid wanted a suspension seatpost. The only one i could find that would fit the 26.8 seat tube has a elastomer spring. The spring looks in good condition but its too firm for her weight.

Is there a way to make it softer? Drill a hole through the centre or lots of holes through the sides?

holes through the sides, then you can start with a few small and see how you get on, add more if needed?

Isnt there a bolt in the bottom of the seat post which compresses it.

Isn’t there a bolt in the bottom of the seat post which compresses it.

pre-loading or pre-compressing a spring doesn’t change it’s rate though, just the amount of force required to initiate movement.

BITD when I had elastomer forks with a limited range of elastomer grades I drilled small holes through the sides.

Aye. Drill it out. Its just holes held together by rubber. More holes is not a problem.

    Just a update.

I needed it a lot softer. Drilling worked a treat.

Started off drill bit 1 around a cm apart. Tested, redrilled, tested etc.. Ended up with bit 5. Looks like Swiss cheese – very happy kid.

    Thanks all.
