Considering a campervan for weekends away etc with wife and wee fella. Considering a T4 pop top camper but prices seem all over the place when viewing gumtree/ebay/autotrader. Also note not many lwb versions around so may have to resort to a swb. Would we miss the extra room of a lwb given its the 3 of us?

What price range do you recon we should be budgeting for this?

T5 would be nice but think the costs again would be prohibitive.

A pop top is 2k plus to fit, so expect that above un-topped price. We have a T5 with vamoose pop top and could sleep 5 at a push. If camping for more than a stopover, we stick an awning style tent up and only use the van for storage/ bedroom. All cooking etc done in tent. Any van with 3 front seats should see you right. Put a bed and windows and insulation in. Pop-tops give room to stand up or a sleeping space for 2. Get a van as above – no built in cupboards or cooker etc, then see if you need the roof. Hi-top is a cheaper option.

If you want a professionally-done, fully-featured one in good nick, £6k+. Up into five figures for a late-model Westfalia or something. SWB fine for two adults and a tiny. LWB pop-tops are pretty rare. Lots of shonky DIY stuff around, but also some nicely-done ones. Watch out for chancers who’ve stuck shiny alloys on, bunged a sofa bed and some chipboard inside and marked it up £3k. Consider high tops — less cool, more practical (unless you need to go into multi-storeys a lot…).
