I think that the trunk-stump has contracted slightly so it wobbles in the base. Its C of G moves forward a bit and them momentum brings 6″ of fir tree and baubles crashing down. It is now lashed back to some window fittings.

For 20 years I suffered with a hateful stand that neither supported the tree effectively or gave you the opportunity to give it water to stand in. For 20 years I could be found outside on the Saturday before Christmas with a small axe whittling the base of the tree to to fit in the sodding thing. For 20 years I weighed down the stupid little arms to stop the tree falling over. For 20 years I’d throw the stand back in the shed after new year in disgust and vow to get a new one before next year. For 20 years I would search behind the clutter of crap in the shed on the Saturday before Christmas to find where I had thrown it the previous year when I realised I had failed to bother fulfilling that vow and was too tight/sentimental to throw it away.

This year I moved house in the summer and the old stand didn’t make it with us. Probably still sitting behind the old shed at the old house dejected and rejected. I had to buy the new one at the 11th hour at a quite frankly blackmail price as I am an idiot and forgot to buy it cheap online but at least I did. Using a new one that actually works I can’t believe I put up with that piece of crap for so long.

None. We have a wide-legged stand for it.

I did have to move it yesterday though. A stain on the ceiling above it indicated a leak of some sort, resolution of which involved cutting a chunk out of the ceiling.

Surprisingly none. Considering we have a 3 year old who seems to be possessed by the spirit of am overly energetic border collie. Lots of decorations missing or broken though.

Empty bucket, drop tree in backfill with 4/10mm gravel. Not a bit of movement. Probably as good as when it was still attached to its roots 😉

If you are having problems keeping your stump upright, you may have to see a specialist. They should be able to advise you on how to stop int contracting and falling out. 😛

It’s not fallen over yet but it’s a miracle considering the amount of time this little sod has tried to climb up it…

We’ve got 2 kids under 11, 2 cats and a 1 year old dog and up to now the tree has remained upright.

8 footer in the lounge, 6 footer in the living room, 6 footer in the hall, 3 footer in the dining room, 3 more 3 footers in each of the kids rooms. That’s 26 feet of Christmas trees.

Not once – but it’s 3ft, in the living room which only gets used when No.1 & No.2 are here.
So far last weekend when it went up, and today-sat – after which it will go back in the f’ing box until as many years later as I can get away with…..

Not once, base is sturdy but I don’t think it was designed with watering in-mind, it’s been ‘handed down’ and may be older than.

Tree looks okay, but you daren’t touch it for fear of all the pines falling off at once – it’s only meant to last for another 5 days, but if it even looks at me funny after the kids go to bed on the 25th it’s going to find itself in the garden waiting for the day the bin men come for it.

Same story as convert but then bought this cast iron job. Weighs about 20kg and also has a small spike in the middle of the base where you centre the tree after drilling a hole in the trunk. Also takes water to keep the tree going a bit longer.

Bought a plastic stand 2 years ago.

Worked fine tbe first year as tree was sandwiched in a corner

Last year it fell over in the hall.

We threw out the stupid plastic stand.

Big cast iron stand this year.

The kids brought the tree down on the first day it went up and smashed £200+ of glass decorations..

Have never had a tree fall over – didn’t even know that was a thing. Plastic stand here with nice wide legs and it holds water to keep the tree going – trunk is centered with a half-ball screwed into the bottom and then 4 clamps.
