  • How easy to upgrade Rotor size ?

I have Avid Elixir Custom R SL on a Stumpjumper Comp.

Need a new rear rotor and was hoping to upgrade (size wise)

Is this easy, like just need a new caliper mount and new rotor, or is there more to it than that ?

Links to bits required would be a big help.

    Thanks.

Firstly, yes it is that simple.

just google what you nned in terms of adaptors

ie 160mm IS to 180mm PM adaptor

secondly match up the 5mm increments they ‘can’ make a difference ie 180mm vs 185mm

Finally, do the front at the same time, it will make more difference to your braking than the back anyway

Dead easy. Like you said, just replace rotor and adaptor.

Superstars site has the adaptors and it’s easy to work out what you need.

    Plus they’re cheap.

What size are you moving from? And what too? Its a 5 minute job really

    Lots of adopters Here

Just make sure you get the right fitting – post mount or IS mount – then the right size. Bobs yer aunties live-in-lover

If a larger rotor will fit your frame (and doesn’t foul the chainstay)

Take a look at the current clearance it should be obvious enough if a bigger rotor will fit, if in doubt ask Spesh

Then an adaptor and rotor is all you need

    Cheers. Sounds good.

(what do IS and PM stand for ?)

    Sorry 😳

The front should be larger than the rear, as its the one doing all the work.

    IS – International Standard
    PM – Post Mount

I’m sure you are none the wiser…

post mount go parallel with the wheel

IS goes 90* to the wheel

Righto. So (I think?) I have:

Custom Avid Elixir R SL brakeset. (9 months old)

Post Mount on the front (185 G3Cs Rotor)
International Standard Mount on the rear (160mm G3CS Rotor)

What I would like to upgrade to is 203mm on the front and 185 mm at the rear (or 203mm all round if that is at all sensible?)

I’m pretty heavy and could do with all the help I can get, and riding 20km alpine descents was cooking the brakes pretty fast.

Sell the lot and buy something else? (what would be better?)
    Or
Upgrade the rotors and buy the relevant mounts? (which rotors and mounts ?)

Any thoughts on what is the best course of action ?
