    32 with a 29er and 40 on the back.

i was thinking 30 as i think the general consensus is to keep it out of the 42 tooth on the back i think and i dont think i’d be doing myself any favours with a 32. expensive decision!

Man up (or get small old school wheels) and go for a 34 front and back

By the way I live in the south…and may have a bail out granny ring fitted behind my 1x….

Edit sorry blatantly unhelpful as failed to think about the xx1 reference.

30, but my frame won’t allow anything bigger, so only option. 29er.

    32 on 27.5 (Peak district)

I’d like a 30, but it’s not bad enough for me to put my hand in my pocket

Tried a 28 with a 42 out back on a 29er, but it wasn’t low enough for my liking, so I’ve gone back to 2×10 ! Might try it on the 26″ bike though.

1×9, 32:11-34, Peaks District. 26 wheels. Legs wasn’t the issue for me (well maybe a little, but not as much as I was expecting), more a mindset and approach thing. You’ll be reet! Just got some SPD’s, and some winter/injury turbo fitness so might even stick on a 34t oval in the summer. I’ve found myself wanting a higher gear more often than a lower.

    30 on fat 26er (XO1)
    32 on normal 26er (X1)
    32 on 650b (XX1)
    34 on 650b (XX1)

Slight hijack, if I were to change from the 34 to a 30, do I have to shorten the chain?

    34t 11-40, probably better with 32t.

Just ordered a 32 on a 29er, mates just got his 29er with a 36(!) on it, but he does have an FTP of 385watts so I guess he’ll be okay….

Still an odd choice, unless he’s doing a lot of road riding on it.

    32 x 11/42 on short travel xc 29er hardtail.

Blimey, the world of mountain biking has clearly passed me by. A 42 tooth on the back! What are you guys riding up?

32/42 is a comparable gear to a 22/28. Not that low.

Well that’s a debatable point but I’m assuming the little cog on the cassette is very little to give people a proper range?

32 on 29er, but is a bit too small, will prob move to 34. 11/36 cassette.
36 for 26er was perfect when I had it.

    34 then 32

    all with a 10 speed 11-36

    its very hilly here

    How’s it debatable, it’s basic maths? 😕

    It’s a 10t on SRAM cassettes, a 320% range.

“Not that low” is a debatable point

    njee20
    Free Member

Well it’s not quite as low as folk running a triple will have, which was my point. You were implying that a 42t sprocket would give some insane low gear.

    robj20
    Free Member

    Debatable, lol not really.

    11-36 x 34
    0.9 – 3

    10-42 x 30
    0.7 – 3

    10-42 x 38
    0.9 – 3.8

    =10-42 wins

The 10t makes a massive difference.

    On the low side a 28 x 42 is the same as 24 x 36
